Show DAVIS SEPTEMBER 25, 1985 REFLEX-JOURNA- AP program explored As more teachers become involved in the AP program, student participation and success has increased. Three years ago 49 students passed at least one AP test with a score of three or higher (3-- 5 is passing). Last year 75 students passed an AP test. I ROM 8 English students in 1972 the program has expanded to 220 AP students in 1985. Layton High now offers AP classes in nine By DONETA GATHERUM LAYTON - Last Wednesday, the AP teachers and the administration at Layton High School hosted their first open house to explain the purposes, benefits and goals of the growing high school AP program. After introductory remarks by Principal Paul Smith and Counselor Jacobs, each AP teacher at Layton High explained the philosophy of their particular AP -- areas - biology, chemistry, computers, English, American history, European history, math, physics, art and music. The AP computer program was introduced last year. AP art and music classes are new to the program this year, Some AP classes like chemistry and biology receive assistance in the form of lab sessions from local colleges. BESIDES the benefit of receiving college credit for passing the AP test, teachers at the open house stressed many other values to the students that come through the AP program. Class size is generally small so students receive more individual attention. Students are taught critical, logical thinking processes that can be applied to life situations and to other classes in school. Idea teaching is stressed in all AP classes along with outlining, persistance, preparation and the quest for excellence. AP students receive a deeper, more meaningful education. They perform better in college and graduate in greater numbers than do students. It seems that the AP the non-Aprogram generates an enthusiasm for learning. This may be the most prized accomplishment of the AP program. PARENTS AT the AP open house program learned that success in an AP class takes cooperation between the student, the teacher and the parents. All must be willing to devote extra time to guarantee student success in the test, dmg classroom and on the -- program. THE MEETING was well attended by pa- rents and students. The AP program is geared for those high school students who excel! in one or more academic areas. The course of study is prepared by the Educational Testing Service of SING IN JAPAN Kaysville area residents who sang their way into the hearts of thousands of Japanese during the Mormon Tabernacle Choirs recent visit included: back, Spence Kinard, left, Burton Winters and Connie Crofts; front, Joyce Winters, Marilyn Elison, Christine Deppe, Marvin and Barbara Jenkins.
