Those other. When Craig (Carter) is throwing we root for him and when Pepo (Olivas) doing his thing, we support him. Were just like a family. OLIVAS had an exceptional day for the Falcons as he finished third in the shot put (50 8'2), second in the long jump (19 12) and third in He had misforthe javelin at 165-tune in the discus with scratching problems. 1 1 Because of Olivas overall 6-- 2, wants to be jumping at bigger events. DAVIS WAS quite upset when the judges gave Viewmonts Sorenson the 3200 meter title so he came back the second day to win the mile, take second in the 800 meters and help the mele relay team take first. Coach Flint told me not to worry about the 3200 meters, but come back and win the mile. I took his advice and did it, said Davis. At a crucial time in the meet when things could have gone View-monway, Clearfield got a strong showing in the 400 and with Don Gladfelter taking second, Lance Roberts placing third and Rodney Ruybal getting fourth. It was also helped with the sprint relay taking second and Viewmont taking last after dropping the baton. CLEARFIELDS medley team made an impressive showing as Leo Artega, Jimmy Tubbs, Lance Roberts and Don Gladfelter combined to give Clearfield the victory there. One of the most exciting races of the day came in the mile relay where Clearfields Davis had to hold off a couregous effort by Laytons Terry Kealamakia to help preserve the win. Davis work in the distance races helped him hold on in the end. ts Winning the mile relay at the District Meet was Clearfield as Sandy Thurgood. Stephanie Clements, Annie Prokopis and Diane Tubbs did all the work. Lady Darts, Clements And Day Sparkle At Sunny District Meet By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports - BOUNTIFUL The 1985 Davis District Track and Field Meet will have a few things to remember it by especially when it comes to the girls competition where there is no question that preps like Clea- rfields Stephanie Clements, Laytons Carol Day, Viewmonts Jenny Miller and the entire girls crew at Davis High will linger on the memory. IN 16 events, there were 7 new records set by this years crew of Davis County women athletes. Either the judges were a bit slothful or the women are getting better with each year that passes. It was just last year that seven new records were posted as well. Frank Thompsons Davis High gathering finally won the 85 event held last Friday and Saturday at Viewmont High School. The Lady Darts mounted up 148 points to their old Davis District record. To cap the day off she made a brilliant run in the mile relay to help her school win there. And for the second straight year, she was tabbed as the meets Outstanding Female Athlete. Layton fourth at 71, Woods Cross fifth at 46 and Bountiful sixth with just four points. hours after accepting the MVP trophy, she was competing with a dozen other girls for the Miss Clearfield title. Still another remarkable performance came from Laytons Carol Day who took first in both the high and long jumps. Even more remarkable was her setting new meet records in both events. second place Viewmonts 119. Clearfield was third with 98, IN WINNING however, Davis posted only one first place as Val Thompson won the 100 meter hurdles. Thompsons girls used depth to win this one as eight girls placed second, six placed third, six placed fourth and two were fifth. Outside Davis winning the team title, there were some brilliant performances that made this meet extremely entertaining. CLEARFIELDS OTHER STRONG Clearfield finishes included Larry Johnsons third in the high hurdles, Todd Fergusons third in the pole vault, and Gerrard Strackes third in the 200 meters. Clearfield had to feel good about the finding of Darrel Hicks in the long jump. Primarily a baseball player, Hicks came out on Friday to take fourth place in the long jump with a leap over 19 feet. There could be some grooming there for the future. Sophomore Robert Porter lets this discus throw fly, far enough that it earned hinm second place behind Clear- fields Vaun Waite. star, 'Stephanie Clements won both the 100 and the 400 meters and was also a member of the winning medley and mile relay teams. It was one of her most memorable days as a track star which includes a lot to choose from. In winning the 100 and 400 meters, she set new Davis District marks in doing so. She broke Laura Zauggs old mark in the 100 with a new time of 12.62. Her new record of 58.56 in the 400 broke her old record of 58.99 set just last year. wasnt all. Clements also helped anchor the winning medley relay team which broke BUT THAT Midkiff Tops In Javelin MIDKIFF has been coming on like gangbusters as of late. His furthest throw at the beginning of last season was 125 feet but is now up to 18-- 1 Vi which won the Davis District meet. MidkifFs emergence has been a blessing for Jones with the decline of Date Tetero who has a nagging injury right now. As a sophomore Midkiff played baseball but made the switch to track his junior year because as he put it, I thought thats where I could do the best for our school. The sprint relay team of Reid, Christensen, Willhide and Gray is an unusual combination of all sophomores. They call themselves the Oreo Express because two of the runners are white and two of 1 IT WAS a hectic weekend for Stephanie who ran back and forth from Clearfield High to Viewmont High as she competed in the Miss Clearfield pageant Friday and Saturday. Not more than three DAY, A SERIOUS competitor, has been trying hard for two years now to be the best in those events. And Saturday she proved she might have something worth taking a look at. She won the high jump with a leap of 7 which shattered Tracy Fishburnsold mark of 1 setback in 1982. Her leap of 'i in the long jump beat out Lisa Hansons mark of 16-5-- JENNY MILLER of Viewmont also had a fine weekend as she won both the javelin and discus events. She set a new record in the javelin. Davis eight second place finishes included Stephanie Hess (shot put), Sarah Hiller (high jump), Lisa Schryer (long jump), Teresa Cross (800 meters), Val Thompson (javelin), Schryer (200 meters) and Davis High in the mile relay. them are back. It works out that the lead man is white, the second is black, the third is white and the fourth is black. They all ran at either North Layton or Central Junior Highs last year. They had an impressive Saturday as their time of 43.70 broke the old Davis District record set by Viewmont back in 1982. Regular $850 value, limited MORE IMPRESSIVE showings by Layton kids included the efforts of sophomore Robert Porter who placed second in the discus, Darrell Martin's second in the high hurdles, third in the 300 IM hurdles, and fifth in the long jump, the mile relays second place finish, Stevens third in the high jump, the third by the medley relay team. 1985 Honda BEAR RIVER (LOG HOMES 1. But the little brother in this story, Craig who is a junior these days at Clearfield High, might be even better than Mark at his stage in the game. Even Mark has admitted to that. MARK BECAME a shot put hero during his three years at Clearfield High and culminated a lot of hard work and time by establishing a state record in the shot in 1981 at Weber States shot put pit. That mark extended out at 61 feet 3 and one-hainches. In time he was awarded a track scholarship at Utah State where today he is just starting to come into his own again. Last Saturday he won the Beehive Invitational in the shot put with a throw of 58 feet, of course with a little heavier steel ball than what he threw with at Clearfield High. lf BUT HERE comes Marks Best 12 61-- 3 Craigs Best 14 59-- 8 Carters primary challenge comes from Bonnevilles Chad Law, a senior who beat Craig out for the state title last year by two inches. Chads longest throw this year in competition has seen 59-- 3 and last Saturday at West Jordan he threw it 58-- 6 (A. CHAD PUSHES me and I push him, said Craig, I still havent thrown well against him and thats because Im too nervous when Im around him. Im going to relax from now on. Craig, who isnt a bad running back in football either. At last Saturday's Davis District meet held at Viewmont High School, Craig let go his finest throw yet. It landed in the grass area, but still in bounds. When Brandon Flint, the former Layton High and BYU football star laid down the tape and said it had gone 84, Craig and his teammates went ape. That was enough to beat out the old Davis District mark set back in 1981 by you guessed it, Craigs older brother Mark. 59 IT BECAME the first time in Craigs promising future that he had officially beat one of his brothers shot put marks. And according to Mark and the father of the two, Ralph, it won't be the last. Craig isnt even close to his full potential. Hes going to be a good one, said Mr. Carter who wasnt a bad shot putter in his day either. Craig Carter ousted his brothers old record in last Saturdays Davis District Meet. CARTER WON the shot put with a toss of 59 8 'A which set a new district record. The old record was held by his brother Mark whos had the record since 1981. Craig also was third in the discus and ran the last leg of the second place sprint relay team. Walker won the high jump with a far below what he leap of SO IT is official, Craig is now the new district holder in the shot.
