KAYSVILLE The race forthe Region Four pennant gets underway this week and even though folks are saying no one is going to overpower the Bountiful Braves, vou'd have a tough time trying to convince Kent Draayer and his Davis Darts that they have to lay over and play dead. The Darts seem to have a little pre-seas- bit more enthusiasm spread throughout their ranks this season, probably stemming somewhat from last spring's visit to the state tournament. THE FALCON champions included Vaun Waite in the discus, Craig Carter in the shot put, Todd Walker in the high jump, Todd Davis in the mile, and a pair of victories in both the medley and mile relays. Waite, who hasn't thrown the discus much at all in three years, said, I was relaxed Friday and had nothing to lose. I always perform better with that kind of attitude. Journal Sports - It was Terry BOUNTIFUL Kealamakia Day at Viewmont High last Saturday as the Layton High senior dominated in his track During the pre-seaso- n Ken Hicks tried to use the time to find a which he thinks he suitable line-umay have come up. During last loss to Bountiful and weeks p 8-- 2 also in the 10-- 5 defeat at the hands of Granger, Hicks made some changes that could positively affect the rest of the season. ONE OF those changes was to bring one of his solid outfielders, Mike Call, into the infield and let events. AND IT was only fitting that when the day was over he be awarded the 1985 Most Outstanding Male Athlete Award, an award he won unanimously. Kealamakia, who found his nitch in the hurdle races just last year, made up his mind during the winter he would make this spring even more memorable. Thats one good reason he has yet to be beaten in a major hurdle race this year. LAST SATURDAY he won both the 110 high hurdles and the 300 Intermediates and set new Davis District records in the process. He won the 110 highs early Saturday with a time of 14.70 which beat out Troy Hanks old record of 14.81. It wasnt a close race as Kealamakia won over his team- him take over the second base spot. Call was to have started as second base against Layton. The other positions could be filled as follows. CLEARFIELD will start junior Paul Taylor behind the mound and will go with senior Danny Richardson on the mound. Richardson has been Clearfields most consistent pitcher through the At first the Falcons will have Ryan Fisher there and will go with Call at second base. At short Darrel Hicks will man things and at between Greg third its a toss-u- p Bowen and Jeff Folk. THE OUTFIELD seems to be where Clearfield is the strongest as Mark Adams, Troy Bodily, Call, Tommy Price and Matt Taylor man those positions. he-m- Kealamakia, Midkiff and Oreo Express Make Jones Smile Does Clearfield Have The Defense To Defend Crown? The Falcons CLEARFIELD began early this week on their road to defend their Region One baseball crown, a defensive job that isn't the most envious task in town. Stephanie Clements and Terry Kealamakia were bullish on Davis District track records last weekend, both of them combining to break five meet marks. They were clearly the M VPs for this year. Individually Clements mastered the 100 and 400 while Terry was a in the hurdles. n. mate Darrell Martins time of 15.56. They call themselves the Oreo Express". From top to bottom, William Reid, Joe Christensen, Darrell Gray and Gary Willhide combined to help Layton win the 400 meter relay in record breaking time. All of them are sophomores. THE SECOND hurdle championship came in the intermediates where Viewmonts Casey Klien-ma- n had posted the best time in the trials and enjoyed the status of Barts Split Their Weekend - Should they 30UNT1FUL 'C been or shouldnt they? niAT WAS the question posed track coaches around Davis unty who were generally disused with the fact the Davis rts didnt put their best team in Fifth Annual Davis District ick and Field Meet held last Fri- and Saturday at Viewmont :h School. nstcad of putting his best people he Davis District Meet, Coach Mike Shaw elected to send the majority of his kids to the Coaches Invitational held at West Jordan High. RUSS JONES of Layton commented. "They should have been here. Its a Davis County event and the Darts are part of it. Davis skipped the Davis District meet when last week's Coaches' Invitational was canceled and rescheduled for last weekend. Shaw felt he needed to get various parts of his team qualified for state and since the West Jordan meet was a state sanctioned event, he opted to go there. AT THE Coaches' Invitational, the Darts finished in fourth place, just three points out of third. But meanwhile, back at Viewmont High, the Darts were represented with only points on the boys side, which got them a last place finish. The Davis High 400 meter relay had the best finish at 1 1 Viewmont as they chalked up a fourth place final standing. AT WEST Jordan the medley relay team placed second and did qualify for state, which was Shaws primary reason for going to West Jordan. But there were some other good showings as well. Greg Willard took second in the high jump, just missing first place. Jeff Ohlwiler captured another second in the javelin, just two inches off the first place mark. The final second place position came from Eric Thompson in the discus who threw it 148-OTHER TOP finishes included Thompsons third in the shot put, Clay Singleys third in the javelin, Kurt Black's third in the 3200 meters, Ohlwilcrs fourth in the discus, Mark Gunty's fifth in the 400 meters, Singlcys fifth in the long jump and Cliff Mays sixth in the 400 meters. Lane 4. But Kealamakia blew his competition away in that race with a clocking of 38.97, another new district record. Terry had held the old mark which was 39.20. Klienman was second in the 300 IM with a time of 39.99. had one performance before the day was over. It came in the mile relay where he made a gutsy and heroic try to catch Clearfields Todd Davis in the last leg of that race. Kealamakia was perhaps 60 to 70 yards behind Davis in the second turn of that last 400 meters but caught Davis with just 25 to 35 yards;from the finish. But Da ;.is, with endurance being his specialty', used a last gust kick to narrowly beat Terry at the tape. Regardless of the finish, it was Terrys tremendous comeback that BUT KEALAMAKIA more star-studde- d had the folks a talking. FOR THE day, Layton finished third in the meet with 104 points. Clearfield was first and Viewmont was second. But despite not winning the title. Russ Jones was real pleased with the effort logged by his kids. The kids performed brilliantly and I couldnt have asked for anymore. Of course we can still improve as the season goes on, but I was pleased with how things came out, said Jones. THE THIRD place finish may be a bit deceiving to some people. Layton in a big meet, with the kind of performances they got, would have outscored Viewmont who took second place. Layton's other two first places included Joe Midkiffs winning toss in the javelin and the sprint relays gall iant effort. William Reid, Joe Christensen, Gary Willhide and Drrrell Gray all were members of the championship 4(H) meter relay team. Continued next page |
