Show DAVIS REFLEX JOURNAL APRIL 1 7, 1033 A sports Kealamakia Off To Another Great Start Falcons Come OGDEN - The Lancers are in the thick of it in track and field, dont let the surface results fool ya. From Behind By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports OGDEN - What be, finally was. IVEIIEII STATE state. But the Falcons not only qualified a bunch for state, they shocked the state by winning the big 0 spring meet by a single point, 61-6- over the Scots. Timpview was was third with 36, Alta was fourth with 32, Hillcrest fifth with 30 and Layton rounded out the top six with 29 points. (3-- (4-- (4-- INDEED it was a shock. Many Clearfield athletes were shaking their heads in disbelief as the trials concluded. Their disbelief stemmed from the fact that not one Clearfield sprinter or hurdler had qualified in the finals of the 400, 100, 200, high hurdles or 300 IM hurdles. Thats tough to take especially when Ben Lomond had a couple qualified in each. But tradition must mean something as Clearfield made a torrential comback in the last hour and a half of the meet to overcome the field. The Falcons, who just missed winning the state title last spring, have won five straight region championships. YOU COULD start naming people like Todd Walker who has made a turnabout from a year ago. The senior won the high thus jump with a career best of giving Clearfield its only first place of the day. Another bunch who made the win possible was the mile relay team who knew they had to finish at least two places ahead of the Scots to have a chanre of winning. And they did as they took second to Ben Lomonds fourth. Still more names include the field event bruisers, guys like Craig 6-- 6, TERRY Kealamakia is back over. LAYTON picked up some more points in the field events as sophomore Robert Porter took fifth in the discus (142-6- ) and a sixth place finish from Joe Midkiff in the javeline at 173-The Lancers other lone top finish came in the sprint relay where they got fourth with a clocking of 45.12. again doing his tricks of old in the hurdles. The lanky senior beat out Shane Johnson of Ben Lomond in the 110 highs with a clocking of 15. 10 and he edged Scott Urban of Hillcrest in the 300 IMs with another impressive time of 39.14. He is the defending state champ in the 300 IM race and looks stronger 4. Ohlwiler Wins Javelin ? OGDEN - Perhaps Jeff Ohlwiler ought to get hurt before track season every year. No one wishes that on him, but the Davis senior WED TALKED about it a couple of days before coming over here, said John Flint, We knew Ben Lomond would probably win it so we made up our minds to qualify as many kids as possible for is gained 36. 3-- A 3-- A CLEARFIELD, the defending champion in the 12th annual Weber State Track and Field Invitational, wasnt the favorite to repeat as champion. No way. The Falcons didnt have the blue chip kids theyd had a year ago and more or less were conceding the title to Ben Lomond, an Ogden school loaded down with talent this spring. 4-- A But it could have been even better when you take a peak at Layton top six finishers who were beat out contenders. Take the by kids out and Layton would have netted a nice 19 point gain, good enough to give both Clearfield and Ben Lomond a scare who actually finished one and two respectively wasnt going to -- THE LANCERS have nothing to be ashamed about, but rather use that kind of news to their advanmeets. tage at upcoming The Lancers finished with 29 points which was only seven points from third place Timpview who UNDER THE reigns of a very determined Russ Jones and a 1985 group of kids that have the makings to do bigger and better things, Layton gained a very respectable sixth place at last Saturdays 12th annual Weber State Track and Field Invitational. & and faster than a year ago. Darrell Martin put in a good day at Weber even though hed like to rerun the hurdle races. He was running in fourth place in the highs before taking a fall but he did get a fifth place in the long jump with a leap of 20 6V2. Martin will be back in the hurdle races before this year in the meet. -- -- seemingly comes through when the chips are down. Larry Johnson hurdles during Weber State Meet last Saturday. Carter, Vaun Waite and Pepo Olivas in the shot and Carter, Olivas and Ferrin in the discus. These gentlemen combined for 34 of Clearfields 61 points in those two events. EVERY POINT counted on Saturday and the rest of those point getters included the medley relays second and Todd Davis fifth place in the mile run. Flint, totally taken by the return to the championship stand, said, When I took a look at our chances for this year after last seasons disappointment at state, I can honestly say that I was a little worried. AND I still am, this meet was very deceiving. But as far as last Saturday goes, I wasnt giving us any kind of a chance of winning, and neither did the kids. They came in relaxed and just wanted to qualify for state in their respective events. Its nice again to be something other than the favorite because you do relax and tend to perform a little better. all, but when indoor season started he showed up a changed man. Since that time hes made a attitude wise, doing most of it by himself. Its unbelievable how far hes come. Hes done things like go over to Weber State and run their stadium stairs and overall has worked his head off. Im just extremely proud of him because hes made the effort to turn himself around. WALKER was expected to go no higher than 2 or 4 but hit 6 and won the high jump in the season's first big meet. The Falcons kept up their strong tradition in the relays by getting second in both the mile and medley. As Flint said You can win without blue chip athletes in track by doing well in the relays, weve always felt that way. Theyve been perhaps more of a key for us than the field events. That tradition started in 1976 with Jay Welk, Don Pollock, Rick Lewis and Ron Peterson who won the states mile relay, the schools first state cham- U-tu- rn 6-- 6-- 6-- BUT FLINT admits that the question marks were there. One of them being Walker in the high jump. Said Flint of Walker, He was a huge question mark before the season began. I didnt have confidence in him, he wasn't dependable, very imature and just undisciplined. I figured if we got anything at all, itd be gravy. THROUGH the summer and fall I had very little contact with him at SUFFERING from a severely hurt ankle that he sustained back in pionship in any event in track. WE HAVE to do well in the relays because of our weakness in the sprints and hurdles, said Flint. Running in the medley was Gerhard Steracke, Rod Ryubal, Don Gladfelter and Todd Davis. That line-u- p will change as meets go on because of their qualifying for state. The second place mile quartet consisted of Rod Ryubal, Lance Roberts, Gladfelter and DAvis. This was the same team that nearly won it at the Simplot Games in Idaho. January while playing basketball for his church, Jeff overcame it and won the javelin event at the 12th Annual Weber State Track and Field Invitational held last Saturday in Ogden. own personal best. The next closest throw came from Drew Naylor of Olympus with a throw of ifying mark in duals or big meets which is highly unusual. That might come in handy with the rule change that allows a team to qualify as many people as theyd like in any individual event. out the winner. It does hurt to throw it but its not that bad, said Jeff. I COULDNT have had more perfect conditions to throw under. The wind was perfect and the sunny weather was ideal, he continued. Ohlwiler, who is the defending decathlon champion in the state, 185-- came on the third throw of the trials which broke the school record of 201 feet. Ohlwiler did not throw in the finals for fear of straining more ligaments in the ankle but still came Ohlwiler won that event with a record toss of 205-- 3 which broke the school record and became his IN THE discus, Craig Carter took second with a toss of 162-1, 145-- 1 and Pepo Olivas was third at Scott Ferrin was fourth at 143-Carter and Olivas are only juniors. In the shot it was Carter taking Vaun second with a throw of Waite was third at 53 1 Vi and Olivas was sixth at 51 6'2. DAVIS finish in the mile was a key and relfected some of his dedication.
