Eliott Dr. By DONETA GATHERUM - What do you get LAYTON when you combine pieces of balsa wood, a thin strip of cardboard and some model glue'.' I he answer is a model bridge. WHAT DO you get when you combine pieces of balsa wood, a thin strip of cardboard, some model glue, principals of physics and creative design? The answer is a model bridge that w ill w ithstand intense pressure from a special stress machine. The concept of using balsa wood and the principals of physics to build model bridges was developed by three professors in the engineering department at USU. The men are Drs. Elliott Rich. Lynn Carter and Vance Christensen. ABOUT 18 or 20 years ago these men organized a contest between the physics students at Logan High School and Sky View High School. The competition was intense, the prize was important but insignificant compared to the satisfaction a student got when his bridge was still in one piece when all others had broken. The interest in the model bridge contest was so great that the USU engineering department offered the bridge building challenge to other schools in Idaho and Northern Utah. The expanded contest is now in its 17th year. ONE PRIZE is given for each 20 bridges entered. First prize in a school is cash award and a ticket to a special engineering banquet for winning contestants and physics teachers. USU offers a $300 award each year to the bridge building senior who best qualifies for admittance in the USU College of Engineering. OTHER colleges and universities in Utah now are sponsoring bridge building contests similar to the program developed at USU. The kits, rules and stress measuring equipment have improved each year the contest has mulated a figure based on pound-o- f pressure per square inch on each of the five shocks. Readings could range from 0 to over 2.000. Tuesday afternoon 8' Layton High School students earned then bridges in the contest. Each student was trying to break a state record set by a Layton High bridge builder last sear. STL DENTS cheered as the bridges were placed under stress machine, the numbers flashed on the read out board and the weak portion of the bridge broke under the pressure. Early in the competition Garrett Dutson's bridge measured 1515. He sat as other bridges challenged this mark but failed to meet or surpass it. "GARRETT'S bridge held well. The weak point proved tobe where the glue bonded the balsa wood to the cardboard. guess it wasn't quite level. Garrett explained. Garrett, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Quayle Dutson. is a junior at Layton High. He plans to attend the University ofl'tah and major in medicine. been held.
