LAYTON - Among the 52 college scholarships awarded to Layton High School Seniors were several very prestigious college since the 8th grade. He served as -- DAVID F. LONG KAYSVILLE Five youth from Davis High School will be attending Utah Boys State Convention June 9 at Utah State University Campus in Logan. 3-- THE ANNUAL convention is sponsored by the American Legion Posts throughout the state. The five boys are all junior students at Davis High. They are David Long, Mike Tremea, David Kinard, Robert Peck and Valoy Seeley. THE BOYS State program is to teach the youth of today constructive attitudes toward the American form of government. They will be taught the duties, DAVID KINARD privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship. Each boy will have a definite and integral part in the program at Boys State and be under the supervision of trained counseling staff. DAVID LONG is the son of Frank and Jane Long of 579 S. Angel St., Kaysville. He is a member of the National Honor Society, active in drama, speech and competitive piano. He is the orchestra accompanist and concert choir accompanist. David teaches locally. He studied under Lenore Neal, associate professor at University of Utah. He will be 1985 Yearbook copy editor. Michael O. (Mike) Tremea is the son of Ronald and Cathleen MIKE TREMEA ROBERT PECK Tremea of 650 S. Grand Oaks, Fruit Heights. He is active in music and the Kays- HE LETTERED in football and soccer. ROBERT (Bob) Peck is the son of William O. and Mamie Peck of 364 N. 700 E., Kaysville. He is a member of the National 5 Honor Society and the Fencing Club at Davis. Leach received a Departmental four year scholarship to the U . of U given by the Geology and Geophysics Department. Valerie has been active in many academic programs at Layton High. She served as president of the Physics Club and secretary of the Chemistry Club. She was a member of the Math Club. In 1983 she took second place in the bridge building contest. This year she received a second and third place in the same contest. Valerie plans to major in geological engineering. TIM Eccleston accepted a scholarship to the General Motors Institute. He was sponsored by the Assembly Division Van Nyes. Tim is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Eccleston. He holds the state record and the 1984 first place aw ard in the bridge building contest. He was a member of the Honor Society, President of the Math Club, vice president of the Physics Club and a delegate to Boys State. Tim has maintained a 4.0 GPA THE UTAH Career Teachers awarded to Julia scholarship Christmas, the daughter of Renee N. Foster. Julia attended Girls State. She w as a member of Orrin Hatchs Youth Advisory Committee, DECA. the Honor Society and the French Club President. s . Julia was the Sterling Scholar at Layton High School in social studies. She will major in English at Weber State. ONLY 35 high school students in Utah receive the Presidents scholarship from the U. of U. Jill Yonce. the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Parsons, was one of the select 35 seniors. She will use the open scholarship to study psychiatry. Jill was a member ot the Honor Society, the Writing Club, the Physics Club, the Bon Teen Board. DECA and the M.ith Club. She has won many awards in Math. English and Social Studies. She was a National Merit Scholart, dmg ship semi-finalis- Gains Pres. Award Susan Costley, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John M. Costley, was honored this week at Utah State University by being presented w ith the USU Presidents Citizenship Award. GAIN APPOINTMENTS THE AWARD is given to the Universitys two most outstanding male and female graduating sefiiors in recognition of scholastic and extra curricular achievements. Susan was also chosen by her sorority as Outstanding Chi Omega and Outstanding Scholar of Chi Omega. SHE HAS also been selected as a member of Phi Kappa Phi, an honor society and has served in Mortar Board and Blue Key Organizations. Susan will receive her B.A. in English and will be graduating Magna Cum Laude. Receiving appointments to military academies are Lancer graduates Collin Schaffer, left, Kevin Scott Allen and Carlos Salazar. LAYTON -- Three Layton High - School students have been selected to attend U.S. military academies. A fourth student chose to turn down the academy appointment and accept an ROTC scholarship and a McDonnell-Dougla- s scholarship instead. THE STUDENTS who will attend military academies are Carlos Salazar, the son of Chief Master Sgt Carlos and Irene Salazar, Kevin Scott Allen, son of Colonel and Mrs. Robert L. Allen and Collin Shaffer, son of Walter and Mary Shaffer. Carlos and Scott will attend the U.S. Air Force Academy. Collin received an appointment to the Naval Academy. Kim Tunley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chris E.W. Tunley received an appointment to the Air Force Academy. She turned down this award in favor of an ROTC scholarship and a McDonnell-Dougla- s scholarship to BYU. CARLOS Salazar has an outstanding academic record at Layton High School. His studies emphasized scientific subjects. He was the treasurer of the Physics Club, president of the Writing Club and a member of the Orrin Hatch Student Advisory Committee. Carlos attended the Model U.N. He was a member of the school cross country team and the soccer team. Carlos received a $1,000 Merit Scholarship, a scholarship from Central Davis Junior High School and scholarship offers to USU, BYU and a Naval ROTC scholarship. LAYTON - Three Layton High School graduates have accepted ROTC scholarships. The awards can be used at any college or university that has an ROTC program. -- KEVIN SCOTT Allen will study aeronautical engineering. He wants to become a pilot. Scott comes from a military family. His father is a civil engineer at Hill Air Force Base. Scott was born in Germany. He has lived in West Virginia, Virginia, Texas, Alabama and Florida. At Layton High School, Scott belonged to the Math Club, the Physics Club and the Writing Club. He attended Boys State. Scott was a member of the Honor Society. He was active in the high school drama department. COLLIN Shaffer served as president of the Chemistry Club. He lettered two years in high school football. Collin placed fifth in the seniors division of the National Math Test. He received a superior rating in sports writing at the statewide journalism competition. Collin will attend the Naval Academy.
