Show TheSalt LakeTribune SPORTS Wednesday, November22, 1! NIT Boasts a Marquee Matchup Hoyas’ Iverson Tests Georgia Tech’s High-Profile Marbury THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEWYORK — ThePreseason NIT got the semifinal teams it wanted and the individual matchup everyone hoped for. The marquee says No. 5 Georgetown vs. No. 25 Georgia Tech tonight. The buzz is that Allen Iverson is going against Stephon Marbury. Iverson, the Big East rookie and defensive player of the year last season as a point guard, leads the Hoyas against Georgia Tech’s Marbury, the highest of this year’s high-profile freshman about to play in his first college gamein his hometown. “T'll enjoy it within the context of the game,” Georgetown coach John Thompson said Tuesday of the backcourt confrontation. “I can’t enjoyitif it’s not in the context of the game. Remember,it’s not Allen playing Stephen We're playing Georgia Tech.” Thatis true, and No. 16 Michi- gan plays No. 19 Arizona in the other semifinal with the winners meeting Friday night. But Iverson and Marbury took the highlight a route to Madison Square Garlen. Iverson and freshman backcourt partner Victor Page combined for a few fastbreak dunks that were the window dressing on easy wins over Colgate and Temple. “His judgment on the break hasn't been as goodasit has been in the halfcourt,”” Thompson said of Iverson, who had 24 points, 10 reboundsandfive assists against Temple. “On the break he is so confident in his own ability and then he has goneon to create for others.” Iverson played against Temple with a strained right shoulder and an eight-stitch cut over his right eye “He practiced with no restrictions,” Thompsonsaid. “He's just fine.” Marbury was slowedby tonsilitis in the first-round victory over Manhattan. All the way down to 16 points, including an alley-oop dunk that had certain television analyst screaming louder than usual “I wish people would stop saying Stephon Marburyvs. Alien Iverson,” Marbury said Tuesday. “It is Georgia Tech against Georgetown.” Then he got caught upjust like everyoneelse This is something to pay money for,” he said. “It is one good show.” The opener of the doubleheader will be a decidedly different matchup, “Our game will be more along the lines of a team concept,”Arizona coach Lute Olson said Tuesday. “Everyone will be involved in our game whereasthe focus of the other game will be Iverson and Marbury.” Senior guard Reggie Geary has been the leader for the Wildcats on both endsof the court. “He's been a great defensive player,” Olsonsaid. ‘‘He's a great competitor and heseeshis role as getting the ball to open people. He's the best leader we've had since Steve Kerr.” While Arizona had to win at then-No. 16 Arkansasto reach the semifinals, the Wolverines won at homeagainst DePaul and Weber.
