Comments heard in the lobby of the UA Prestonwood, where the top-secret showing was held, ranged from “good” to ‘a lot better than I expected” to “definitely needs some work,” according to Elyce Franks, who was amongthe audience. Costner reportedly sat inconspicuously in the back of the theater. “I think the best way to deseribe him was that he looked very concerned,” said Franks. “His hair wasa little shaggy and he was wearingglasses.” Somehow the teen network, possibly clued in by the spate of limousines outside the theater, learned of the star’s presence. “T don’t know how many girls were surrounding the limos, calling his name as he walked outof the theater,” Franks said. “He turned and smiled andsaid hi.” “Waterworld,” with a rumored budget of $175 million, has been dunked in publicity, much of it negative. It’s the most expensive movie ever made — and one of the most trouble-plagued. Bad weather, the collapse ofsets, the state of Costner’s marriage and his creative differences with director Kevin Rey-nolds, who withdrew from the film earlier this month, all have caused chaos. Another special screening of the film, an apocalyptic adventure described as “Mad Max on Water,” occurred two weeks ago in Sacramento, Calif., to a decidedly mixed response. Franks was at the UA Berkeley in Plano, Texas, last weekend to see “Die Hard With a Vengeance’ when she was asked to fill out a form stating her age and moviegoinghabits. The research grouptold her she could call them in a few days. Whenshe did, they sent her a letter of admission to the ‘“Waterworld” sneak, not divulging peared on screen, some of us turned to each other and said, ‘Oh, it's “Waterworld We hoped it would be ‘Batman For- ever,’ she said, a statement that cannotthrill Universal Pictures executives. After the showing, Franks was selected for a 20-member focus group to discuss the film at the front of the auditorium. They did not knowatfirst that Costner andseveral of ‘“Waterworld’s” producers weresitting in the back row andthat their conversation was being taped. Of the group, four rankedit excellent, four stated it was above-average and eight dubbed it “average.” Franks was among another group of four whofelt it was “fair.” “The budget shows on sereen,” shesaid. “The sets and special effects were terrific, and menlikedit better than women. But right now the movie runs about two hours and 45 minutes, and we had definite ideas on how it could be cut. There’s a long, passionate, corn- ball speech that Jeanne Tripplehorngives. It can definitely be cut. And there are scenes of Dennis Hopper’s eye popping out. That’s really graphic, but the producers said they definitely plan on keeping the eyepopping scenesin. Even If You’re Pregnant, It’s First Come, First Seated Dear Ann: Is chivalry dead? Who can remember the days when a gentleman got up and gave his seat on a train or a bus to a woman whowasvisibly pregnant? I am expecting myfirst child in four weeks. Several women have gotten up to let mesit down. Most men just stare or hide their faces behind a newspaper. Some men pretendto be asleep, whichI find childish After putting in a full day’s work, I am exhausted. Carrying around those extra pounds makes it difficult to stay on myfeet, but I can't quit work becauseI need the money. I wonder howthese men would feel if THEIR pregnant wives had to stand and hangon to a strap while other men sat Maybeif you print this letter, some ofyour male readers will be a little more compassionate to pregnant commuters. — Disgusted in Long Island DearL.I.: Don't count onit. A woman on my staff who has been riding the bus to and from work for severalyears saysshe has never seen a man get up and offer a womana seat, pregnant ornot. The good newsis that she has witnessed manyteen-agers, both male and female, get up andoffer their seats to pregnant orelderly passengers.
