To receive additional in- -formation, call 1-800-363-3732. ~._ A wide variety of thermostats exist in = the marketthat allowyou to save money = and energy. For years, thermostats were operated manually. However, automatic and programmable thermostats are available to homeowners, which are specifically designed to be energyefficient. =. A thermostat is a temperature-sensitive * Switch that controls a furnace, air conditioner or both. When the indoor air temperature falls below a furnace’s thermoStat setting, the switch movesinto the “on” position. When the air temperature rises to the desired level, the switch turns the furnaceoff. An air conditioner’s thermostat works similarly except that it is activated when the indoor temperature rises above a preset point and is switched off when the house cools to the desired level. Manually-Adjusted Thermostats Anyone concerned with energy costs can set back his thermostat at night and whenheleaves his house for four hours or longer. Lowering the thermostat makes the heating unit run less, thereby saving fuel and money. The only exception to that is heat pumps. When a heat pumpisin its heat- ing mode, setting back a conventional heat pump thermostat can cause the unit to operate inefficiently, thereby canceling out any savings achieved by lowering the temperaturesetting. Maintaining a moderate setting is the most cost-effective practice. Recently, however, some companies have begun selling specially designed setback thermostats for heat pumps, which makesetting back the thermostatcosteffective. In its cooling mode, the heat pump operates like an air conditioner. Therefore, manually turning up the thermostat will save you money. The U.S. Department of Energyconducted a study to determine the benefits of setting back a thermostat at night. The computerized simulation was based on a standard heating and cooling system in a typical American house and on weather data from the National WeatherService. A Salt Lake City homeownercan save 7 percent when heturns down the furnace at night from 65 degrees to 60 degrees. A ten degree reduction can save that same homeowner11 percent in heating costs. Of course, exact savings will vary. Likewise, turning upan air conditioner’s thermostat from 75 degrees to 78 degrees can significantly reduce energy costs. Automatic Setback Thermostats Although a thermostat can be lowered manually, setback units adjust the thermostat automatically according to a pre- set schedule. Normally, to save energy you might lower the thermostat before going to bed, and then turnit up in the morning. Automatic units lower the heat at night, and then turn it back up before you awake in the morning. Onceset, there is no need for adjustmentif your daily schedule remains the same. For more control over the thermostat, a double setback unit will adjust the indoor temperature four times per day: at bedtime, before waking up in the morning, after leaving for work and before returning homein the evening. Programmable Thermostats The newest generation of residential thermostat technology is based on microprocessors and thermistor sensors. Most of these programmable thermostats perform one or more of the following energy control functions: © Accept multiple daily settings, which are stored and repeated. Thesesettings can be manually overridden withoutaffecting the rest of the daily or weekly program. @ Allowsix or more temperaturesettings a day, usually ranging from 54 degrees upwards. © Adjust heating or air conditioning system turn-on time as the outside temperature changes. Most programmable thermostats have a liquid crystal display for house temperature. Some have a back-up battery power pack. Nora Wagner . Salt Lake City ANSWER:According to Randy Eagar, president of Eagar and Companyin Salt LakeCity,it is misleading and inaccurate to determine the price of a new homebased on square footage. There are many factors that need to be considered along with square footage, including the quality of the building materials being used, the amenities and types of fixtures employed, andthelocation of the home,to namea few. Even the size of the homeis a critical price-determining factor — asthe size of the homeincreases, the volumeof building materials being used also increases, thus the price of the materials goes down in relation. For a moreaccurate estimate of the cost of a new home, Eagar suggests consulting with a realtor who can project the cost of the hometaking thepreviously mentioned factors into consideration. “At Home in Utah”invites its readers to submit questions to the Newspaper Agency Corporation, “At Home in Utah,” 135 S.
