A non-studentrenter faced eviction from BYU-approved housing for campus. Some 18,000 single students live off campus in private housing. Private landlords advertise their buildings as “BYU ap- proved,” and they rent that housing only to students. Because nearly 99 percent of BYUstu- dents are LDS, that amounts to religious discrimination, the ACLU argues A little-known element in the case, however, is that the 1978 agreement between BYU andthe having posters of scantily clad womenin his apartment That man is not aplaintiff in the ACLU's case, but 20-year-old Mark Wilson, who is one of the two ACLUplaintiffs, had a similar experience. The bulk of the avalanche roared downan hourglass-shaped gully, probably burying Scothern at its narrowest point. Avalanche rescue dog Crystal sensed something there Saturday, as did the dog accompanying Kimbrough on Sunday. “Wedug down 7 or 8 feet and Sisters Wait for a Gene To Cure Anemia @ Continued from B-1 Snyder girls, according to their mother. There may be more who are not diagnosed. Snyderis involved in furthering research on Fanconi’s and has sent samples of her daughters’ blood and skin to the Oregon bank. She also is a memberof a support group affiliated with the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund in Eugene, Ore. launched by Lynn and Dave Frohnmayer after three of their children were diagnosed with Fanconi’s. The temperatures for today and Tuesday will range from the mid- length of the probes and we still didn't touch bottom,” said Crystal’s handler, Bruce Ewert, an Alta ski patroller. “There’s probably 25 or 30 feet of debris there.” Not much snowis needed to bury someone under fatal depths in gully, making such areas particularly hazardous. “If you're trying to get on that ridgeline that’s the wrong place to go doit,” Kimbroughsaid. Theslide area was filled with “terrain traps,” features that compound the avalanche hazard, suchascliffs and trees. “There was a bunch of ways to get killed there,” Kimbrough ences University, put his foun- dation in the spotlight when he conducted a well-publicized, but ultimately unsuccessful, search for a bone-marrowdonor. Snyder and her husband spend most of their time trying to give Jessica, 6, and 5-year-old Amber what most other kids take for granted. Thegirls attend school, althoughforonly half the day because theytire easily. And despite the threat of bruising andbleeding, Jessica and Amber bike, skate and take dance lessons. “Do you let them have as normal life as possible or do you keep them homewith you?” Snyder asked. “I'd rather they live only two years than four years andnot have those experiences.” As the girls romp through a sampling of their Christmas toys Snyder and her husband recall the shock of Jessica’s diagnosis. She was born small — under 5 pounds — and nearly died in her first days of life. Within 10 days, doctors discovered she was deaf and needed surgery because the bones inside her ear were misshapen. She uses hearing aids and also has spinal-cord abnormalities. Despite being seen by a parade of doctors, Jessica was not diagnosed until 1993 when she was 4. That is not uncommon for Fanconi’s patients becausetheir first symptomsarepresentat different ages in manydifferent ways. “They told me they thought she had leukemia,” said Snyder. But there were no cancercells in her bone marrow. During the next 10 days in the hospital, Jessi- Rescuersbelieve the avalanche slammed Wheelerinto a tree, possibly causing fatal injuries. A test on her chromosomes, which showeda pattern of breaking and rearranging typical of Fanconi’s, finally gave the Snyders an answer. “We werein shock,” Snyderrecalled. There was no history of the disorder in her or her husband’s family. The shock deepened whenthey learned that few doctors in Utahhad evertreated a Fanconi’s patient because the disorder is so rare. Now, they regu- larly allow their daughters to be examined by groupsof doctors-intraining. “We feel like the more doctors know, the better. We'd rather not have anyone go through what we went through,” Snyder said. Soon after Jessica was diagnosed, Amber began losing weight. The Snyders were advised to havehertested for Fanconi’s as well. After five of the tests came back positive, the Snyders had to accept the inevitable.
