EDITOR Dutson R Marge Barton Kerrie Snyder: Compositor Our Town FILLMORE B by STELLA DAY fifes?) i, i-.- Since my ward, the Fillmore Fourth Ward, held their barbeque in the State House Museum Park this week, it carries on the tradition which was begun by the Pioneers, when they were crossing the Plains. Before going to bed each night, the travelers sat around the camp fire and told stories, sang songs and even danced to the music of the harmonies, violins, accordions, or any musical instruments which happened to be in that camp. Brigham Young believed in going to bed in a happy mood. Many of the Saints walked most of the way and needed their rest, any by singing and dancing they relaxed and forgot how tired they were, thus it did not take them long to get to sleep when they did go to bed. Happy relaxed people accomplish much more than do disgruntled ones. It is almost unbelievable when we think that a session of the Territorial Legislature was held in the State House in 1855, since the one wing of the State House was completed, although the pioneers had been in Fillmore just barely over four years. They had had to build homes, churches, roads to the canyons in order to get the sandstone from many miles up the Chalk Creek Canyon, and also to get what timber they needed to build their log shelters, called "homes and schools. They had also had to plant and raise all of the food for the settlers since they were a two weeks journey from Salt Lake, (there and return), where they could get more food, that is, if they had the money to purchase food. Fillmore had no natural food here, and everything the pioneers ate had to be produced here as the pioneers had no money to spend for anything. School teachers were even paid with produce. No food was wasted as it is today at the school lunches and public eating places. They wore their clothes and mended them as long as they could be worn, then the rags were torn into strips and woven into carpets. Nothing was ever wasted, and we could do well to practice this tradition of the pioneers today, instead of having to have so much help from the government. People who work each day are healthier than people who over eat and don't get enough exercise. I am sure w e would be a healthier, happier people if w e all kept on working as the pioneers did and enjoyed working in our gardens, even though we can afford to hire our work done. If we don't need to work we could at least do many volunteer jobs such as helping to build the new library, and helping to develop the New North Park. The pioneers had been in Fillmore just about six weeks when they finished building a school house, true it just had a dirt roof and a dirt floor, with a large fireplace in one end of the building. The building was also used as a dance-hal- l. The dancers and onlookers sat on seats made by placing rough boards on blocks of wood and covering the boards with blankets and quilts. The musicians played for every party whether it was a wedding, a birthday party or just a program. Hiram Mace was the dancing master who taught the young people how to step dance. Only square dancing was allowed as dances such as waltzes were not allowed as they were considered indecent. Some of the musicians were Horace Russell. Issac Carling. Joseph Pugmire, Nelson Bartholomew, John King. Gabriel Huntsman (who played the accordion), Mel Bartholomew, Ned Stevens. William Stevens, and Albert Shails. The musicians were often paid with potatoes, cabbage, squash, even tallow candles sometimes, but you did not stay home from the dance if you had anything you could use for money, since money was very scarce. The fireplace and few candles with carrots as the candle holders furnished the lights. Mothers wTapped the babies in blankets and took them along. Since there was no fruit until the fruit trees started to bear fruit, however everyone raised muskmelons, and watermelons which were generally furnished at dances, especially early in the fall, and molasses candy made from the skimmings of the molasses, since the pioneers made gallons of molasses which took the place of sugar. Children did not eat a lot of "junk food during the early days and they had better teeth than the children have todav.
