"Bertha, come look here al that guy running in the rain! I tell you, someone has to be right out of his mind to sweat and slink like that when you dont have to. You know, 1 think that is the same guy that ran all through the winter with all the drifts and wind. I stopped once with the truck and asked him if he wanted a ride hack to town. You know whal he said, Its too nice a day to miss running in it". And here it was with the pipes freezitg and the snow piling up. People like that just have to be clean out of their heads. It docs often seem strange that some people choose to in running or swimming, bicycling or weigh lifting several times a week with no more reason than that they enjoy it and feel good afterwards. You do get stronger physically from these activities but what most people do not know is that you also can get stronger mentally and emotionally. And it is this new strength for dealing with everyday problems and stresses that keeps the runners participate running. At first you have to force yourself to do the activity but after awhile it becomes a part of your day. It feels good to accomplish each little goal for improvement. Patience increases, there is more energy for chasing the kids around the house, the demands that others put upon you are forgotten for a small island of lime during the day when you arc doing something for yourself. While your body is working at something that soon is more like play, the mind is free to sort things out, relax, or enjoy being alive. You know Bertha, sure did like myself more when I was a kid and did things like running and swimming. I dunno, maybe that crazy runner isn't so goofy after all. Here he looks happy and I feel kind of grumpy most of the time. Maybe tomorrow Ill try walking and see if that crazy good 1 feeling will find me. Thomas D.
