Vine 262-680- Barley growers should line up their seed Barley growers who want to take advantage of the added protein yield afforded by the new Bracken variety should soon be lining up their seed. Larry Sagers USU Extension Agent noted that there is quite a bit of the seed available in Utah for this coming growing season, but the supply is limited. Plant breeder Dr. Rulon Albrechtsen, Professor of Agronomy, USUS pointed to the protein yield advantage of this new barley variety released last year by the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station. He said, "During the 1980 crop year the Bracken variety averaged nearly two percentage points higher in protein than Steptoe when grown under com- parabe conditions at five ) the state. Bracken averaged 11.72 percent protein while Steptoe averaged 9.9 percent. "That added protein can be a real benefit for growers who are selling their barley on the basis of protein content and for people who are growing barley and feeding it in their dairy or other rations where protein content is important. Research and grower experience has found the new variety to be comparable in yield and test weight to Steptoe, which Dr. Albrechtsen said has been the highest yielding The barley in Utah. Bracken barley does appear to have a little more resistance to loose smutt disease and a little better straw strength. Sagers lauds its qualities but says, "Bracken isnt for everybody. He noted that experienced seed dealers caution that those who must wait for a commercial combine to Snow may be bad for winter wheat This could be a bad year for snow mold and dwarf smut, two serious diseases in wheat that are intensified by lots of snow, says Larry Sagers, USU Extension Agent. He advises growers to watch for snow mold. By the end of January, check how deep the snow is and dig down through the snow to see how deep the frost Is in the soil, note If tunnels or air pockets are forming over the furrows and check the condition of the wheat. If the frost Is about gone, air pockets have formed and the leaves are turning watery and leave a green stain when brushed against the snow, expect that snow Is mold under way. Realize then that about the only remedy available is to spread fly ash over the fields by airplane or ground application when a week of sunny weather is forecast. It will hasten melting and removal of the snow. Sagers said growers may not be thinking about putting ash on this year. They Have not had to In the last couple of years because the winters have been fairly open. Those 0 growers who have experienced snow mold damage in the past and have found that furnace ash obtained from the generating plant has helped to reduce damage probably ought to start making arrangements now to get the ash and to have it applied. Weather conditions also are ideal for dwarf smut this year since most of the wheat got up well in the fall and snow came after a fairly warm November and December covering ground that was not well frozen, Sagers said. He expects that growers who planted the old smut susceptible varieties will experience considerable damage, however, he said fortuneately most Utah growers In the smut areas Hansel, Jeff, planted Weston or the new Manning wheat variety. All of these are fairly high in smut resistance. Though disease conditions this year may be bad for some growers, they may be good for the Sagers plant breeder, said. "Wc will probably get a pretty good challenge by these diseases allowing us to select for resistant types. 1982 looks good for , SMOppOrS 1982 is off to a good start for Utah food shoppers. Wrestling news LIVESTOCK Show Board MM S NEWS . 864-350- Jr. Livestock John Berg says the January food price survey by KSL Radio and USU shows another substantial drop in your food bill. The survey of 10 Utah cities shows food prices dropped 3Va percent and are now cheaper than they were in all of 1981. The total on the 10 items is now $15.61.. ..which is about the same as it was in June, 1980. Interestingly enough 5 of the 10 items rose in price. ..eggs up 8 cents. ..chicken. ..6 cents. ..and up 2 cents each over Dec. prices were milk, bread and margarine. Four of the survey items went down in price... but were much more dramatic. Bacon and round steak both down by 25 cents a pound each. Lean ground beef down 19 cents a pound. And sugar Is now 2 cents cheaper. A quart of salad dressing stayed at $1.37. St. George turned out to be the most expensive city in the survey for January followed by Cedar City, Brigham City, Price, Fillmore, Salt Lake, Vernal, Ogden, Provo and then Logan where the total price was $1.88 below the statewide average. The current prices on milk and eggs, by the way, are now at the highest level since KSL and USU started the food price survey in Jan. 1980.
