A Often a performer is described as talented, and a great amount of prestige is given him. But more important in his performing ability than talent are time and technique. Ideally, some of all three shall be used in his performance. To consider each : Talent is the natural ability to do something well with less training than most others need to reach the same level. As preeminent as talent is, it can be destructive to ones ability simply by making something too easy for him. He may not take time to develop technical faculties to perform beyond the beginnings of practice. It becomes boring to rehearse beneath his potential even for a short time. So he begins at a place above the average beginner but he ends at a place far below the one who practiced diligently. Talent alone cannot equal technical practice. Anyone who does something well has taken the necessary time to develop his skills. Physical ability and organized thinking do not come instantly. To perform well it is essential to have spent enough time in repetitious study that certain motions become automatic. Hiis is another point at which talent can be destructive: a talented student may be too impatient to invest the time necessary to develop beyond a certain point. Again, he may become stagnant at the degree to which his talent has taken him. Technique is the methods of details essential to expertness in performing any art or science. It gives one the physical ability to create the theoretical idea. It lets one use elementary procedures (each of which he has mastered) to do great, advanced things.
