Show The Mt. Pleasant (Utah) Pyramid October 31, 1952 Suggestions On Bird i Soil Testing A t" To 4 , X test can be used to indicate fertilizer that practices should be followed on your farm An ideal time to take these samples is this fall while taim work not rushing and the soil is sufficiently dry for adequate sampling Also, if samples are taken now and the results obtained, then you will have sufficient time to purchase the necessary fertilizer materials. For fertilizer lecommendations the following proieduie should be followed in taikng samples: X. Any one sample should not represent itiore than 10 acres of a uniform soil condition. 2. If soil conditions vary within a field of 10 acres, then separate samples should be taken to represent each area. 3. The sample sent in for analysis should consist of a composit of at least 5 samples evenly spaced over the field These 5 samples should be carefully mixed so that the field is well represented. This is particularly true if it is necessary to submit only a portion of the total volume of soil taken. 4. Take the sample to a depth of 6 inches. 5. Submit at least one pint for analysis. 6 Carefully number and identify each sample. 7. Supply additional crop and yield information on blanks available at the office of the County Extension Agent. It is very important that this sampling procedure be carefully followed if the results of the analysis are to be of value. An average soil will weigh approximately two million pounds per acre to a depth of 6 inches when dry. The one pint sample sent in to the laboratory for analysis would therefore represent at least 20 million pounds of soil if 10 acres were being sampled. This will emphasize the importance of proper sampling procedure so that the one pint will correctly present the necessity of sampling separately any area that may be somewhat different from the rest of the field.
