Many months ago I received a letter from my mother telling me that the editor of the Pyramid would like to have a letter from me about Finland. I was happy for the opportunity and I wrote back and told my mother I would write to you. As I said, that was many months ago; now I for am about ready to leave home and in thinking of the things that I have left undone this unwritten letter came into my mind. I hope you will still receive it and that you can find An El-do- r Louis W. room for it. I am grateful for you people at home, for the interest you have shown in me, for your prayers in my behalf and for your letters and support. I want to thank you all and I hope this will be interesting to you. Finland is an interesting country, but few people outside of Finland know much about it. So also in all fairness to the Finns and their country I think I I should write you a letter. have been in Finland two and years and that has given me time to learn much about Finland and its good people Finland is concerned about the world; they want other people to know about them. While buying a sleeping bag I told the clerk I was going to this Finland. He said, come you way we have just what want. These have been tested in the Arctic. Men have slept in these bags in 40 below zero weather. I thought that is just what I need, bought it and was soon on my way to Finland. We had a wonderful trip over to Sweden, through Sweden, but the day our small ship pulled out of Stockholm to take us to Finland I felt I was leaving civilization behind. I went to bed really tired and I slept fine until six o'clock, when upon my awaking I heard noise. Half afraid that the ship had hit land or that something was wrong I asked an Elder traveling with me what was wrong. He said it was the noise of the ship hitting ice. He had been awakened by the ship hitting ice shortly after going to bed and we had been This sailing in ice all night. put the finishing touches on my conception of Finland as being a land of ice and snow.
