reiterated time and time agal again ln and without any question having been raised as to its accuracy that utah as a state abounds in every known mineral metal and commodity with the ex of tin cm fin strictly speaking be cause of the restricted area and locality of it its occurrence is a rare metal rare as it is however it is no more so than black ozo kente or mantral wai wax the existence of which on ihfe Atner american ican continent is confined solely to utah and there is but one portion of the state in which it is found at colton and its near neighborhood so prolific in its measures of hydrocarbons and other useful and commercial commodities and here it exists in almot almo t unlimited limited an quantity and of the highest grade in the crude this azal ei ditc itc often occurs 95 per cent pure and refined it lacks only i it per cent of purity in color it is jet black and is very lustrous and susceptible of a high colsh there are many uses to which black or mineral wax an be and is being employed without the addition of any foreign substance it makes an excellent ex ellent sealing wax As its mark is indel lible and water proof it can be used in the manufacture of pencils its it is is used in connection with paints and varnishes as a protective agent and in insulation and installation in electrical appliances and works it competes with pure rubber in various ways the difference in prices and cost being so much in its favor compared with the high price paid for rubber that it will greatly displace the use of this latter commodity when the production of shall become greater than it now is it will hold acids that glass cannot ret retails aill it is used for polishing leather the demand for black ozo kente in this line alone being in excess of the worlds supply and for this special purpose it is in urgent demand at 35 cents a pound it is also used to jive give a hard surface tu to varnish and as a covering for submerged masonry being impervious to water and its us would extend to thousands of other purposes were the supply eaurl to the demand in the worlds supply ly at the present time there is not over fifteen tons of black on the market and yei there is 1 l almost unlimited demand for this rare commodity at figurea figures ranging from to per ton according to quality and use for the refined product THE UTAH CO from the above it will b seen that black in any country existing in quantity would be a veritable gold mine to the fortunate owner 0 of such deposits that any section controlling the production of this rare commodity is as richly blessed as if possessed of mines productive of the precious metals ard especially so when the statement is made that in ahr handling of an mine but only limited capt tal is requited td con corr pared to the vast outlay usually expended in the development of properties productive of gold and silver and of the baser metals for this reason the utah company of salt la lalo owning and a black mine at colton feels that it is 13 possessed of a proposition that will soon yield them large returns upon a comparatively slight investment and in this opinion they are joined by the editor of the mining review who recently made an inspection of the prom hing king and valuable holdings so admirably and coaver b antly located on one of the main railroad thoroughfares of the west sixteen months ago through the efforts of C W shores mark P braffet and as tc the utah company was formed for the exploit exploitation aton and development of ozo kerste deposits at colton at that time the company had but twenty acres upon which to begin operations but since that time the us has added to its holding until it now own owns and controls a mile on the strike of the vein which varies from five to twelve feet in inches to four feet in width GEOLOGY AND FORMATION to the geologist the country round about cotton colton arf presents a 1 moat most interesting study gently undulating ard with no marked evidence of the existence of mineral pre present jent this locality has been over run by the prospector and mining mun for years without his even cusp suspecting acting that bet ter than a gold mine were beneath his feet about the only indication of the existence of or any ether other metal or mineral existing in that locality being a change in the color of the soil roil which in lit this locality and along the strike of the vein is of a lighter hue while here and thee the e along the surface thin sheets of shooting to the surface have crumbled to pieces and scattered the hill sid sides es with float mineral wax as erosion took place the country rock is generally sand stone the vein bearg a true fissure which is absolutely true in ita its course the vein filling is soft clays petrifactions of ozo kente in suspension so to speak filling every crevice ard interstice in the vein the wax condensing into its present form the black lustre of the product being due to coloring matter absorbed d from the tilt earth development AND in the development of iti its colton property the utah company has eunk sunk a working shaft and manway to a depth of too feet this shaft Is substantially timbered as also are all of the workings tw of tol Col tui tolo utah lt ili EXTENT OP OF production with its present equipment and facilities the company can make a daily output at the present lure ture of fifty tons of crude ore daily winch will yield pounds of re fined wax of a value bately of 1000 and it i is confidently expected that this will be the minimum daily output when the company has installed the proposed plant for the reduction of its ores METHOD OF REDUCTION so far the we r has been treated at the howe lull all at colton located about a third of i me from the mine this plant which is owned by a new york company has a daily capacity of seven tons of crude ore and yet with this lit hinted capacity tho the ore it I as treated for the utah Ozo kente company has resulted in an in output of pounds of wax which is now on hand sacked sec see accompanying mf ine illustration ready for shipment and the tte market the lot being worth the reduction process is simple timple in the I 1 extreme and nominally inexpensive the method of treAt treatment Mert consisting of the agitation of die crushed ore in heated water whereby the foreign matter is precipitated to the bottom ot the vats the wax in liquid form floating on the surface sulphuric acid is used as a precipitant and the liquid wax is 11 floated off through faucets into pans or moulds of proper size where after cooling it takes the form of blocks or cakes weighing about thirty pounds each when it is ready for lacking sacking and the market the cost of treatment at the proposed new mill will be in the neighborhood of 2 per crude ton of ore while mining expenses including everything will not exceed 3 per ten the crude ore valuation being 20 a ton thus leaving a net return of 15 a ton a handsome profit LOCATION AND
