Our I p Town USPS 446740 Published Every Friday at Fillmore, Utah 84631 By Progress Printing Company PUBLISHER & EDITOR Susan B. Dutson FILLMORE by STELLA DAY had a long letter this past week naming dozens of eyesores in Fillmore which need cleaning up. Many of them are old buildings which need tearing down. Many lots are full of old cars and junk and are badly in need of attention. The gentleman did not sign I his name, which imme- diately precludes the printing of his letter, since no newspaper will print an unsigned letter. They sometimes print the letter and withhold the signature, if the writer requests them to do so, but they must have the signature for their own protection, in case someone resents having his place named as a disgrace. I am very anxious to have Our Town take first place in the state for its cleanliness and its outimprovement, standing but I dont want to hurt someone's feelings in getting the work accomplished. I have always been willing to help clean up Our Town and I wish with all my heart, that I could still get groups together and get all of these places removed or cleaned up and made beautiful. However, I am too much too lame to be of much use. I could still take pictures of the workers, help organize groups, and make suggestions as to how the work can best be accomplished. Fillmore has won thousands of dollars in prizes, which has been spent on the street trees, the parks, and the Millard High School landscaping, while we had the Fillmore Teen Angels. All of the plantings and the amphitheatre at the new North Park have been paid for by volunteer labor earning prize money from dozens of contest the different groups have entered, and by the Millie Callister donations for landscaping the Amphiand the hill theatre area. We now need play- - ground equipment and a band shelter built in order that our young people can enjoy our new park to its fullest. 1 feel sure we could get money for the material to build the shelter, if all of our fathers and sons would just give of their time and talents to build it. Different groups could earn money to purchase equipment for the playgrounds. If we organize properly, we can find leaders of the different groups such as Cub Scouts, leaders, who could supervise the young people on certain days in order that they could get the most recreation possible from our parks. December, January and February are in excellent months which to get organized, and have everything all planned for early spring. Since it is a program involving the entire community, it should be done under the direction of the Mayor and City Council, under the plans sent out by the Utah Community Progress. Utah Community Progress is sponsored by the of ComDepartment Utah Affairs, munity League of Cities and Towns, Utah State University. Achievement is recognized by the Governor biannually, to communities exhibiting the most overall progress as well as projects, to meet these goals. Industrialists throughout the state incentive provide the money for recognition of community achievement. Fillmore Whenever groups have won money from these contest, the money has been turned over to the City, so that books show the City paying for different improvements for this new North Park, but the money did not come from the taxpayers, it came from the efforts of the many groups which helped win the prize money. I am sure those who have given so many hours of their time to public work enjoyed 4-- H Frankie and the turkey An Original Short Story for Thanksgiving by Marge Barton Day of recollection Linda Wood: Photographer Jane Beckwith: Commercial Printing Deb Greathouse: Advertising Billing Jerry Sorensen Frankie thought a turkey was about the ugliest, dumbest bird imaginable. His father raised turkeys and they had little heads with beady eyes and warty red waddles that made them look as if their throats had been cut. Their feathers were as stiff as porcupine quills and just as useless because they couldnt fly worth a hoot. When startled, and sometimes for no apparent reason at all, they would gobble hysterically and stampede just like a herd of cattle, raising a tremendous smelly cloud of dust and fea- thers. Well, he said to himself, he could put up with the smell and the dust and even their ugliness, but eating them was where he drew the line. Come on dear," his mother would say, Have some Thanksgiving turkey. Everybody likes turkey on Thanksgiv- giving of their time and would be happy to help win more prize money. Blocks make good units for working; the chairman of each block appoints certain people on the block to help him keep his families very active all spring and summer. If a block is small, that is, if there are few families living on some of the blocks, the chairman can offer to join with another small block in order to accomplish certain tasks. I am hoping that 1982 will be Fillmores most successful year thus far. It surely can be a big success if each family will give their pledge that each member who is old enough to work will give so many hours each week, working to improve Our Town.
