The other Indian called him a "Squaw Man because this Indian had let Mother beat him; but fearing he might get same the treatment, they both ran quickly out of the house. The next day these two Indians and one more came to our house and demanded a shirt for the beating she had given the one Indian. This time Uncle Jim Owens was there. Uncle Jim. who was head of the army, drove them away with threats that "he would skin them alive if they ever came back" and they never did. "Mother was a cultured. very refined woman of stately carriage and pleasing personality: a woman who never uttered words of discouragement or complained of her widowhood and hard lot."
