Show Millard Counly Progress. Fillmore, Utah 4631 Friday. July 24. 1981-Pag- e 8 i Panoramaland TOURING PANORAMALANDS PIUTE COUNTY with Zell Gibbs Having more ghost towns than real, maybe more dreams than reality, and decidedly more past activity than present. Piute County remembers the vigor and vitality of the industry that produced and sustained it over many years. Nostalgia for this period of history has carried into the present, and has greatly enriched the heritage of its people, making them a people of generous in nature with a more charitable judgement of the frailties of humankind; a people more comfortable w ith the finite conditions of life, and more inclined to express openly and honestly. They are and living in an strong, historic and very beautiful region. Some of the ghost towns having sizable populations when the mining industry was at its peak were Alunitc, Webster City, Virginia City, Winkleman, Kimberly, and Bullion City. In 1870, Bullion City, located a few miles west of present day Marysvale, contained the entire population of Piute County which numbered 82. Then years later the number had grown to 1,651. It was the first county seat, organized April 21, 1869, and was the cultural and economic beginning of Piute County. Most mining activity w'as centered around Marysvale, tough-minde- Fishlake National Forest Announces Implementation Of The Beehive Peak Fire Management Area June On 19, 1981, the Beehive Peak Fire Management Area Environmental Assessment and Fire Action Plan was approved by the Regional Office of the USDA Forest Service in Ogden, Utah. Implementation of the plan will begin Friday. June 26, 1981. Fires that occur in the 272.500 acre area, which is located in the northern three quarters of the Fillmore Ranger District, will be managed under strict weather and fuel moisture conditions. Fires that burn under desirable fuel and weather conditions benefit rangeland for cattle as well as enhancing habitat for wildlife. Also high levels of accumulated fuels can be reduced to a safe level so that the danger of a large uncontrollable conflagration during periods of very high fire danger is lessened. Large burned areas will be rested from cattle or sheep grazing for at least one year following the fire. This is to allow the new grasses, forbs, and VrusVi species time to become established and capable of withstanding grazing. who Any individual finds a fire in the manage- in interested acquiring additional information can contact Mr. Robert Steele at the School District Office, IhO West Main, P.O. The first church built in the county was the Methodist Church at Marysvale. It is still standing, and in fairly good repair. All the churches built during this period were conceived and largely financed by the mining industry. Church government prevailed, and an ecclesiastic dynasty within a democracy was intolerable to the men who came from the eastern states to finance and develop the industry. They began the battle for separation of church and state that marked the ensuing 50 years of political strife. The famous and infamous have left their mark here. Zane Gray, early writer of western fiction, stayed at the old Marysvale Hotel while researching and writing his classic Riders of the Purple Sage. His opinions and feelings about the region and its people still make for interesting and informative reading. One of the wests most notorious outlaws, Butch Cassidy (George LeRoy Parker), was born 2Vi miles south of Circleville. It was here that he learned the art of changing cattle brands, which led to the rustling of cattle, and later to bank and train robberies. Butch and his "Wild Bunch" rode over large areas and choSc hideouts in the rugged and barren regions of southeast Wayne County. This area was known as the Badlands, and their main and last hideout became known as "Robbers Roost. In 1878, the Piute County Seat was moved from Bullion City to Junction, the first courthouse being a log building. In 1903, the present courthouse was completed. Rocks were quarried from the area; bricks .made at the site; all woods were native, and it was built by native craftsmen. The stately courthouse stands today in good repair, and is one of very few public buildings of its period still used for its original purpose. Oner Creek Lake State Park and Piute Reservoir are favorite water sports areas. Otter Creek has excellent camping facilities; long, unhampered runs for boating and water skiing, and its fishing rated excellent. Piute Reservoir is a great local favorite, with easy access and great fishing. Kingston Canyon is a beautiful canyon for camping, fishing, picnicking, hunting, and exploring. There are many small Indian caves tucked into the unusual and varied rock formations. The Sevier River runs through the area, providing contrast, verdant foliage and good fishing. One gets the feeling that this is, and should be, Indian country. All resources are at hand to make for a culture. Piute County residents love to celebrate, and July is their month. Three full days over the July 24th (Pioneer Day) period are spent in fun and frolic, built around their now famous World's Biggest Little Rodeo". Cottonwood Downs, the scene of action in Marysvale, hosts most local entertainment. The second Saturday in May their annual thoroughbred horse races cause much excitement, and another chance to let off steam. The people here are and friendly, and should you be anywhere near the area during their celebration, join them. 1 T The Intermountain Region of the USDA Forest Service has released its Draft Intermountain Region Plan and a Draft Environmental Impact for Statement (DEIS) public review. A primary purpose of these documents is to resolve region wide issues and to distribute resource targets to each of the National Forests. These targets provide planning direction for developing Forest planning such as that currently being worked on by personnel on the Fishlake Forest. When the Fishlake National Forest Plan is completed in about a year it will show how the Forest intends to meet assigned targets, maintain environmental quality, and assist in maintaining community stabil- 743-979- DEIS Plan FOR SALE Rent: 2 bedroom Apt., all electric, furnished or unf.
