Show Millard County Friday, April 17, 1981 Progress Annual Farm Supplement Page 8 Control Weeds in Small Grains "Don't weeds in small grains seriously reduce your yields, Richard L. (Rick) Chase, Extension weed specialist at Utah State University, urges Utah grain growers. He said, for example, 100 wild oat plants per square yard can reduce yield by eleven bushels per acre. Fortunately, several in herbicides are effective controlling wild oats. These let include Fargo, applied at planting time; Carbyne, applied in the two-lestate; Avenge, applied in the three to five leaf state; and Hoelon, applied in the two to four leaf stage. Hoelon is relatively new and is an excellent annual grass herbicide. If both wild oats and broadleaved weeds are a problem, Chase suggests mixing Avenge or Buctril). Hoelon cannot be mixed with other herbicides, but can be applied fairly early and a broadleaf herbicide can be applied at a later date. Mustards and other broadleaved weeds are almost always a problem in small grains. Tradiand Banvel have tionally, 2,4-been used, except in barley and some spring wheats, with good (Brominal af with MCPA or D bromoxynil results. A herbicide effective on broadleaved weeds that has a higher margin of safety on the crop is bromoxynil (Brominal or Buctril). This herbicide can be or applied earlier than 2,4-Banvel. It shows promise under most Utah conditions. Metribuzln (Sencor or Lexone) is another herbicide effective in controlling mustards and several other broadleaved weeds. It also D For all your controls downy brome or cheat and other grasses. Apply it when the wheat has three to four tillers. Bur buttercup is becoming more and more of a problem in our winter wheat growing areas, Chase noted. This anual weed comes very early in the spring. He suggests applying Igran in the fall or early spring or metribuzin (Sencor or Lexone) or bromoxynil (Brominal or Buctril) in early spring. Field bindweed, often called wild morning glory, is a serious problem in small grains. Yet, Chase said, that is one of the best places it can be controlled. Use 2,4-or 2,4-plus Banvel in the use 2,4-and crop plus Banvel or Roundup after harvest to get an effective control. Dont look for 100 percent control in one year. Over a two to three year period bindweed can be effectively controlled. D D D Veterinary Supplies use Franklin Products aiailikle at Mieir FZ53Z3 o 40 Ne.
