An intense Civil Air Patrol search in the rugged mountains of central and southern Utah had been in progress since CAP was notified the plane was overdue. The aircraft was last heard from when it was rcfuled at Provo enroute and was lost from radar contact at the 7,500 foot level 10 miles north of Gunnison. Utah. Radar is unable to keep track of aircraft flying very much below that level in the Sevier Valley due to the mountainous terraine. The pilot had failed to file a flight plan so searchers could only speculate where the plane might have gone down. The CAP's Utah Wing conducted searches (which involved several members of the Millard Composite Squadron, as far south as the Arizona border. The downed craft was located Wednesday. February 28th, by the Arizona Wing on Powell Plateau 1,000 feet below the north rim of the Grand Canyon about 30 miles northwest of Grand Canyon airport. The occupants were apparently sightseeing in the Canyon when the plane crashed. Because of the high canyon walls the plane's ELT (emergency locater transmitter) could only have been detected from directly overhead. No ELT signal was picked up. however. Most ELT signals are picked up from passing airliners, but none were reported during the search for this particular plane. Speculations were that either no airliner flew over the crash site or the ELT was destroyed during the crash impact. The passengers of the ill fated plane were Lloyd Weir, 60, and his wife, Mary. 59, of Hamilton, Montana and Leonard Grayson, 62, and his wife, Lucy, of Missoula. Montana. All were dead. The bodies of the four victims were removed from the wreckage the next dav. Freedom of conscience, once said, of education, of speech, of assembly are among the very fundamentals of democracy and all of them would be nullified should freedom of the press ever be successfully challenged." Throughout the state of Utah, water conservation begins with the winter snow pack on the mountains. Once each month, during the winter and spring months, snow surveyors from the USDA Soil Conservation Service go into strategic mountain sites on snowshoes, and snowmobiles, and in helicopters to measure snow depths and determine the water content of the snow pack. Information collected from the snow survey program is compliled, reviewed, and then made available to the public. Snow survey information is used to help private, as well as state and federal, water users regulate reservoir levels to conserve water and prevent floods; plan crop acreages, schedule irrigations, and to provide water for recreation facilities and wildlife habitat. No matter who you are or what you do, snow survey information provides benefits to you. The snow surveying program in Utah is a highly cooperative venture between many federal, state, and local agencies and private organizations. John Chotia, President of Wccdhopper of Utah Inc. is currently mass producing an ultra-ligh- t airplane which may very well turn out to be the Model T Ford of the airplane industry. In only 18 months Wccdhopper sales have passed the one million dollar mark and are soaring into the wild blue yonder. Nearly 500 of the tiny craft are buzzing around the skies of such far away places as Australia, Pakistan, and Japan, to say nothing of the U.S.A. Why this great popularity? Well, if you could buy a kit for under $2,700, assemble it in your garage, tow it on a small trailer behind your car and fly it safely out of any open field without a pilot's license, would you be interested? Apparently lots of people are because Wccdhopper production is over three per day and there's an eight to nine week waiting list. The factory recently moved into a larger 11,500 square foot building at 1148 Century Drive in Ogden and now employs 24 people. The Wccdhopper itself is a marvel of engineering, and yet amazingly simple. Made almost entirely of aluminum tubing and brightly colored canvas, it looks like a with wings.
