Show a Doyal Mitchell & AGED-3- EDITOR Dear Editor, In behalf of the Mitchell family, we would like to express the deep shock and hurt we felt upon seeing Gails picture in Because The Progress. Gail's accident has been an upsetting and emotional experience for all of us, it was painful to see it permanently relived in print. This kind of sensationalism is common in the cold, impersonal newspapers of larger cities, but we are disappointed that The Progress neglected to consider the feelings of Gail, his family and his friends in this matter. We realize that the pictures cannot be recalled. But. in the future, other spare please loved ones this additional heartache. Thank you, Betty Jeanne (Mitchell) Moran Dear Mr. Mitchell: SJIM1YY TO THE LETTERS Mrs. We do not believe you would have called the photos in question sensationalism if they had been of someone other than a member of your family. We are deeply sorry for any hurt your family may have felt from seeing these pictures in print, but we do feel that we exercised good journalism by printing them. It was a one in a million chance that our reporters were on the scene at the lime to capture Mr. Mitchell's accident on film. The photos by this newslittle small-tow- n were thought to be paper good enough to have been sent all over the world by United Press International UPI and appeared in many large, cold impersonal newspapers and other types toot the Provo weekly paper comes to mind as one who carried it. Sometimes our type of business leads us to cover many unhappy incidents, many sordid Incidents, and gratefully even happy news as our entire front page two weeks ago indicates. But above all, our very heritage dictates that we carry ALL the news, even though the bad news usually does hurt those involved. If you had been at the scene, as our photographer, Jean Smith, was, you would have realized that she alone reacted quickly tell to Mr. enough Mitchell not to move so he would not touch another hot wire as he was moving around and groping with his hands while still being suspended from his safety By Jim Bushnell USU Ex lent Ion Agent It is a real belt. possibility that by her quick action she may have saved his life. Had Gail Mitchell not lived through his ordeal, the Progress would not have, under any 'circumstances, run the photos in the paper. Even though he was badly injured, he is alive and many people in a situation such as this would be very grateful to have recorded on film the details of their accident. Sometimes photos of this sort are invaluable aids to the family in pressing insurance claims, etc. In essence, we are sorry the family was startled by the photos, but we feel we would have been derelict in our duty to the public if we had chose not to run the photos.
