EDITOR Utah State University p For several years now, the USU Extension Service has had dryland wheat plots at Holden. Dr. Wade Dewey, USU Extension plant breeder, has been doing the plot work. These plots have yielded some excellent results as to yield potential for our area. Many of these varieties are numbered and not available as yet. Those that are available are listed with yields for 1978 crop year. BU.ACRE WHEAT 20.9 Hansel letters TO THE & except Holidays Dear Editor: This summer I had the opportunity to work at one of Salt Lake Countys Recreation Centers. It was a very worthwhile experience. Citizens of Fillmore, 1 wish that we could have had a place such as this when I was growing up in Fillmore. I have been the Progress reading and all the pros and cons about the EMRD. I would like to write about the swimming pool. The comments have been that it would only be for a select group of people. Granted, most of the use will be for the young people, but maybe more of the Senior Citizens and others would be using it if they could have had adequate swimming trainwhen they were ing younger, instead of three months of swimming a year. It is hard to learn to swim correctly when you only do it seasonally. At the Salt Lake Center we had a group of Senior Citzens that swam every day for their enjoyment and health. The pool was reserved at a certain time especially for their use. It was great to see them enjoying the water. It is a shame that in order for people in East Millard to enjoy a refreshing swim they have to travel to Delta. There isnt a better place for people to spend their spare time than at a recreation center. It is much better than riding up and down Main Street. If your children do not have an adequate place to swim, they could grow up like a lot of their parents and grandparents. Take pride in your and the community achievements and ambitions of the "Young People. The recreation center would be a boost to the citizens of East Millard ages 1 to 100! I sure wish that I could have had these opportunities for growth when I was learning and growing in Fillmore. Vicki Jorgensen Haws 4845 South 3960 West Kearns, Utah 84118 Remove clothes needing Ironing from the dryer while they are still slightly damp. Theres no point in wasting energy to dry them thoroughly if theyll only have to be dampened again for ironing. AN OPEN LETTER TO THE PUBLIC I am writing concerning the proposed EMRD project to spend one and a half million tax payer dollars on a recreational complex. We read in the local papers that we need this recreational complex and are referred to all kinds of reasons why: the big growth that's coming; our poor kids walking the streets, etc. (Will the kids really use the handball courts and racquet ball courts that much?); it will only cost you S26.00 a year on a $50,000.00 home or $260.00 on a $500,000.00 farm, (which is one maybe big enough to eke out a living on). What about the real and immediate need we have to expand the Elementary school and build a new High school? Which do we need most playthings for adults or schools for educating our children? We started out wanting an outdoor swimming pool, which sounded like something we might afford. It has generated now into this million and a half dollar complex. Let's examine the cost realistically. We have approximately 3333 people in our area. Divide that into $1,500,000.00 and you get a cost of $450.00 for every man, woman, and child in East Millaid. Then the maintenance costs would begin and we all know that the maintenance and operating costs of a pool alone would be tremendous. We read that we can get a government grant s of the for up to million one or cst. dollars. I would believe this to be a gross Even misrepresentation. if this happened; meeting government specifications and requirements would soar costs out of sight. Who do you suppose pays for those great government grants?? Our national economy is becoming very sick!
