Verhaaren was determined to write my article for The Progress on Chrysanthemums this week, since I have promised to give the lesson on Chrysanthemums in I Garden Club. I I promised before I got the "flu. went to see the doctor last Wednesday and told him I felt better than I have felt in months. That night, in the middle of the night. I awakened with the worst case of sore throat I have had in years and before morning 1 could hardly I get my breath. Just as soon as get over one thing, some little imps seem to fill me with germs ot something else. I really have been healthy most of my life until the last two years, and 1 need my strength to keep this big place even ordinarily groomed. Im extra fond of chrysanthemums and used to have winter-kil- l and that is big beauties. However, they do what happened to ours. Therefore, 1 purchased some new plants and I am looking forward to enjoying a long warm fall in order that I will get to see my new beauties in bloom. Chrysanthemums bring so much joy to the home grounds in late fall when most other flowers have trozen. or at least have lost their attractiveness, wnen I was a small child, everyone had a few perfectly ordinary chrysanthemums, but now there are dozens of dazzling beauties from tiny Bonsai, button, and pompon varieties to cushion, intermediate types, cascades, spoon, and spider types, anemone types where the centers are the main features, large exhibition types in concave, reflex, spoon, and spider types. The Japanese hybridizers have done more to improve the Chrysanthemum than any other nation, since the chrysanthemum is the Japanese National Flower. Some of the large exhibition types, new from 17'j inches in Japan this year, measure circumference and many of the new ones are 12 inches in circumference. One flower with some foliage from such a plant as the shining leaves of the Oregon grape is enough for a table arrangement. Chrysanthemums naturally bloom when the nights are longer than the day, but the florist is able to get them to bloom any time of the year by covering the chrysanthemum plants with a black cloth two hours early, thus making the plant think the night has come. By beginning this night" program in August, we can get our big exhibition type in bloom before frost comes. I had a framework built on the east side of my home and covered it with strips of black cloth which had a large hem at the bottom in which we put thin strips of lumber such as are in blinds. Each day, beginning in August, we would let down these blinds two hours before sundown until we got the chrysanthemums to come into bud. We then picked most of the buds off, leaving just one bud to each stem. Sometimes we left just three main stems to the plant, and sometimes more, depending upon how large we wanted the blooms. 1 had to climb a ladder on the side of the framework to roll the blinds down at night and again in the morning to roll them back up. When I had my leg operation I had to give up my chrysanthemum beds, as I could not climb anymore. This year I decided to have some more large chrysanthemums, but I purchased some which bloom earlier and I am looking forward to seeing some of the exhibition types this fall. We can cover the plants for a few nights and generally we get to see some of the large blooms of the .exhibition types. 1 certainly hope we have a long, warm fall and I get to enjoy my beautiful 1 chrysanthemums once again, for surely have some beautiful plants all covered with buds. 1 will now disbud them in order to have fewer flowers, but much larger blooms.
