If you would be interested, please call the USU Extension office and make arrangements at by Brent Olson Wildlife Conservation Officer Question: Why are the hunting seasons and limits set in the spring? The seasons Answer: are set in the spring primarily because of administrative pressure and problems. True, it would more be biologically sound to wait until just before a hunt starts, but would be highly unfeasible. For example; hunters need to plan vacations: public meetings be held; must proclamations must be in printed, published local newspapers, and distributed; and licenses and permits prepared and 4-- days in Utah are on Satur- day. In fact, it is unlawful to open any season on a Sunday. If a sportsman is deeply concerned about a season length, type of hunt such as a doe deer hunt, or any other aspect of a hunting season, he should be prepared to attend one of the public meetings prior to the setting of the rules and regulations. He should present any information he has such as the condition of the deer winter range, the ratio, winter kills, relative age of the deer herd, number of predator kills and hunter success. When such information is presented to the board it should be in the form of facts and sold. Although 743-541- season lengths, special hunts, and limits may vary from year to year, the opening date for the major seasons remains fairly constant from year to year. The deer hunt will begin on the Saturday closest to October 20, the elk hunt on the Wednesday closest to September 30 and the fishing season on the Saturday nearest to June 1. Many states have opening dates set such as an October 1 opening for the elk hunt. In such states, this hunt is allowed to fall on any day of the week Sunday The through Saturday. vast majority of opening To Our Readers TO OUR READERS The Progress needs a for Scipio. reporter If you are interested in seeing your town in the News and wouldn't mind and items collecting sending them in weekly, please get in touch with this office and talk it over.
