I know that Utah is considered a very dry state, where water is a most prized natural resource, and I, for one, have preached water conservation for over 30 years; however, when it came to running a big pipeline right through my new Iris bed and on down through a very beautiful rose garden, it really upset me. Jack McBride came to see me and said he would move the plants for me and see that contractor did a strip and covered it before he went on to the next strip, so I finally felt better; at least I have consented to let them through my lot. Of course, I will shed more tears and mourn because I am bound to lose some of the plants which had to be moved, as rose bushes dont move so well after getting thoroughly established for four or five years. I have been a gardener since I was old enough to plant. Really I cant remember when mother didnt let me have my own flower garden. Gardening to me is one of the most important Art Forms. I don't mean just a formal, well designed garden where the principles and elements of design are practiced, the elements of Line, Form, Pattern, Texture, Color, and the principles of Balance, Dominance, Contrast, Rhythm, Proportion, and scale. In fact these elements and principles are used in many art forms. However, we seldom find formal gardens in the country. We live in the country in order to raise our own fruit, vegetables, and even meat (sheep, cattle, chickens, hogs, turkeys, etc.). This type of life has always appealed to me. People are more interested in nature and get more satisfaction from the beauties of Nature e derather than from large buildings and vices. We in the country can see a beautiful sunset, or watch the first soft pastel colors of the dawn, change and fade as the brilliant sun rises in the sky. Those colors change to the brilliant colors of the setting sun, and as evening slowly changes them to soft grays and silver in the evening moonlight, our thoughts are filled with tenderness and sincerity. Our flower gardens generally surround our vegetable gardens, at least mine do, as I love to look at the beautiful colors as I work in the garden. Our creator must have thought a garden was very important, for the Bible tells us that after God created Adam and Eve He placed them in a garden. He did not build them a house, but gave them a garden to supply them with food and the trees sheltered them. When Christ was suffering, knowing He was about to be betrayed, He sought His Heavenly Father; however. He did not go to the Temple to pray; He sought His Maker in a garden, the Garden of Gethsemane. One is nearer his Maker in a garden as every day a miracle is performed; today we plant a little uninteresting, brown seed, but wait a few days and it bursts forth from its tomb, a blaze of color; today some brown, g roots, a few tomorrows later it is covered with interesting green shoots. We plant little brown carrot seeds, beet seeds, turnip and tomato seeds, all side by side. How do they turn into long yellow tubes, red globes, white balls, red, juicy fruit? Can you explain this miracle? Can you take this same soil and extract all of those shapes and colors from it? Gardening helps us to understand life and how to Interpret it. The art of living is the accomplishment and fulfillment of our task during our sojourn on earth. Those who observe the rules of life are part of the endless chain of humanity, and are happier human beings than those who have drifted into lives of excess, arrogance, and conceit, who finally destroy themselves through their excesses. If our civilization is to endure we must fill our lives to overflowing with beauty, for a mind filled to overflowing with beauty has no room for ugliness, hatred, malice or sordidly material aspirations. Beauty has the power to lift us from our lower to our high selves, and surely th ; world was never more in need of beauty than at tl.e present time. Above ill rules, deeper than any calculated pleasure, there is something in a garden that is more vital than just creat ng a well designed landscape, or pleasing color harmony. It is a way of life that can heal all bitterness and strife, if we will open our hearts to its magic, and let it lift away the care of every day living, displacing wort, with a song of thankfulness for the lessons it teachet us each day. It makls me shudder when I think of that big Gobbling Machine" with its lumbering wheels and gouging shovels crashing through my beautiful flower beds, as we only moved a few plants, there are dozens of rose bushes, peonies, iris, which are still in the path of the machine, but I am hoping they survive, since the water is more important. & S31 Thanks for the "news" and for the fine service.
