Restrictions which were in effect on those lands during the initial wilderness invenfory would be removed. A final decision will y be made after a review 'period public which will end July 2, according to Paul L. Howard, BLM state director in Utah. He said about 14 million acres are proposed for no further study because they obviously lack characterwilderness istics. Approximately six million acres in Utah administered by BLM are proposed for more intensive inventory to determine whether they meet the roadless and characterwilderness istics criteria required for wilderness study area identification. I was in Seventh Heaven when we had those lovely spring days and I could get out in the sunshine and plant some of my garden. I had the ground plowed in the fall, and just as soon as it dried out enough, I was out raking, breaking up lumps of soil, and leveling it for planting. Since my hip replacement, I have a difficult time walking, especially on uneven ground, and have had some very painful falls which have left me with broken arms, a broken nose, broken glasses, and bruises all over my body. When it snows I am so afraid of falling that I almost hibernate. I darent go anywhere without a cane, crutch, or someone's arm to assist me in getting to the car. Those lovely warm days filled me with new life and I really accomplished miracles (for me). I cleaned one iris bed, cut off all of the old tops of my perennials, planted early peas, and dug grass from my peonies. 1 had some garden planted when Dwight (my nephew) came from Idaho where he and his wife Sylvia had spent a week visiting with Dwights brother Knox and his family. Dwight immediately put an end to my raking the garden. He brought his tiller and tilled the soil and made the most beautiful straight rows for me to plant the rest of my peas and other vegetables that can be planted early. (And incidentally, he and Sylvia planted 20 rows of vegetables in their own garden, just in time for this weeks continued snow storm. But they don't crab when it snows, they just stop planting and go skiing. I cant even walk well, let alone ski. A rake, But I really thoroughly enjoy gardening. hoe, or many other garden tools serve as well as a crutch in helping me walk. There are so many jobs that need doing. The leaves had not fallen from all of our trees when the first snows came, therefore our place needs a thorough raking and cleaning. Everything is so ugly in the early spring, before the ground dries out enough to start the spring work. Most of the streets are full of chuckholes and in the sections where new homes are being built, the northwest section of town especially, great piles of rocks and dirt add to the disorder, from connecting up with the sewer and water lines and basements of new homes. It will be delightful when we are well groomed and orderly again. It is so restful to visit the sections of town where the homes are all neat and well groomed, with lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers, informing the passers-b- y that an industrious, happy family lives in each of the homes. Fillmore is really a residential town, it does not have the potential for becoming an industrialized town, and although we may have to work a few more hours a day to earn a living, it is worth it rather than living where the air is always polluted and the smells make your stomach turn upside down. I haven't hear of anyone dying of overwork. Then, too, we can raise our own vegetables and eat them when they are filled with vitamins. We can also have our own orchards, strawberry and raspberry beds, thus cutting down the cost of living. A garden doesn't have to be all in one place; little gardens can be had wherever there is room. Beans can be planted along fences, tomatoes and carrots can be interspersed with a few flowers to help bring bring beauty to the home grounds; parsley, chives, and sage can be planted among the shrubs or in the orchard. We have three different places on our property which are used for raising our vegetables, but I have planted rose bushes, iris, shrubs, and vines wherever I work, in order that I can see beauty while I weed the garden. Although I cant walk too well, I get along fairly well by working a while then resting by sitting in the shade in my folding chair, which I take everywhere with me. While I rest, I enjoy looking to see which new flowers have come in bloom. We have flowers blooming each month of the year except December and January. Sometimes even in December I have chrysanthemums which are blooming next to the wall of our house as well as my Christmas Rose (Helleborus niger), which has to be protected by thick shrubs such as Mahonia. I do hope our moisture from now until next November comes as rain! & v Southwest Entrance of Review Apparel Fillmore 12 noon - 5 p.m. Monday - Saturday |
