Dutson Marge Barton Reporter - Photographer Compositor DAY Most of us think of February as the birthday month of our two most loved Presidents of the United States, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. I, too, love February for its national importance, but I also love it as the messenger of spring. No matter how deep the snow or how cold the nights, I know there will be spring flowers by the end of February since I have these flowers planted, Chionodoxa and Snowdrops, next to the house where the sun warms the soil and assures the planter of early spring flowers. They fairly make me sing just to think of them in all of this snow. Flowers do so much to make us happy that we should all have some blooming in every month possible. 1 generally have some, except in January. If chrysanthemums are planted next to the house and given a little extra protection they will bloom until December. But January has me beaten so far as flowers blooming outside. We arc all searching for something which will add joy and happiness to our daily lives; something which is interesting and worthwhile, and each of us has his own idea of happiness. People who love to ski or ride snowmobiles revel in this kind of weather, but those who have to shovel long paths and walks, driveways, and roads, groan everytime it begins snowing again. Another storm is not their idea of happiness. Fathers work diligently to make their wives and children happy, but sometimes I think they are trying too persistently to make more money to get more material things for their families when, if they spent more time doing little fun things with their families, and letting the children help with more of the projects that need doing every day, there would be more happiness and less vandalism in our towns. Children need to be a part of our economy, and learn early in life what it takes to house, feed and clothe a family, as well as to educate and entertain the members. Happy families are those who work and play together, each doing his share of the labor which is necessary just to live. A mother goes about her work, quietly considering the needs of each member of the family, but seldom thinking of her own comfort. She is happy if she can do something which brings happiness to the family. Ralph Waldo Emerson tells us, Happiness is a perfume which you cannot pour on someone without spilling some on yourself. In other words, only those who unselfishly give of themselves, who really work to make others happy, ever discover the Bluebird of Happiness. The plight of the minorities and underprivileged has been much publicized, but a satisfactory solution to this problem has not been reached. Each of us has a responsibility to help solve this problem. However, much of the problem has to be solved by the people themselves by preparing themselves for taking responsible jobs. As most of the people know, there arc ways of getting an education, if the persons applying for the scholarships prove themselves worthy of helping. The applicants have to be able to get recommendations from responsible, reliable men Dr. Jensen to speak This should be of interest to each citizen in this area. Assuming your share of the work done in the home, working for friends and neighbors to help with the cost of liveing, doing these jobs to the very best of your ability, being honest with your work, doing a full hour's work for a full hour's pay, being dependable, getting to work when you say you will be there, all help to spell success later in life. All of these traits can be taught in the home. By the time such a child is in school, the teacher knows at once what teachings each child has received in the home. The two choruses had also rehearsed their numbers separately and Dr. Hill added another number which was learned during the clinic.
