Dr. Stevens was born in Fillmore, Utah September 18, 1912, the son of Anna Huntsman Stevens and Rush B. Stevens, M.D. He received his formal education in Fillmore and Salt Lake City schools, graduating from the University of Utah an then finishing his medical training at the University of Chicago, and Rush Medical College in 1937. He served his internship at the Alameda County Hospital under supervision of Dr. Benjamin Black, a native of FillHe took more, Utah. specialist work in obstetrics and general surgery at Los Angeles General and Good Samaritan Hospital until his joining the U.S. Army in 1939. He was chosen to be in the first class of flight surgeons for the U.S. Army Air Force. He left with the first squadron after declaration of war and served under General MacArthur in the South Pacific for two years. He was shot down and wounded in New Guinea.
