I Hal loll i . i, o ( n si B.ll toll DAY Our hard labor in trying to complete at least one project for each division in the Community Progress Program, together with completing many projects, especially in the Youth Involvement Program, has resulted in Fillmore being a First Place winner in one of the departments, but we won't know any more details until the awards are actually made. Mayor Hubert Hdtson received a phone call that we have received a first place, but the actual award will be made at the final day (Saturday) of the Municipal league Convention, which is to be held at the Hotel fount lb, M n there to receive the award and properly acknowledge thishonor. Perhaps many of you are not as interested in entering these contests as I have always been, but I am really convinced that we would not do as many projects as we actually complete if we did not have judges to personally inspect our work. Fillmore has been entering contests since 1949 when we entered the very first Beautification Contest the Salt Lake Tribune and the Ctah Associated Garden Clubs sponsored. I was on the State Board of the Utah Associated Garden Clubs and was determined that Fillmore would enter the contest as I had told the St at e Board that Fillmore had one of the best Garden Clubs in the state, although we were just organized. We had had a group of eight ladies who belonged to the Fillmore Hose Club and these eight people formed the nucleus of the Fillmore Garden Club. We won first place in the state for planting the Hose Garden north of the County Courthouse, however, the members of the Hose Club purchased the rose bushes. Fillmore has won at least one award and sometimes many more each year since then. The Tribune has added many more categories to the contest so that which now thev include nearly every project individuals or groups can complete. More sponsors have joined with the Salt Lake Tribune and Utah Associated Gat den (Tubs. The Utah State University and the Utah Associated Nursery men not only help with the beautification program, but they help sponsor the Spring festival at the Salt Palace. The Associated Nurserymen furnish an award of $300.00 worth of trees and shrubs to the town w hich is the most improved and Fillmore has won that award. A town can only enter three years after having won first place. Tliey also give $300.00 worth of trees and shrubs to the town who has the most entries. Layton won that award last year with 200 entries. Think how and beautification work was done to much clean-uhave 200 entries in a contest. If everyone really am became interested enough to enter this year. sure Fillmore would be a much cleaner and more beaniful town and. even if we do not win. we are greatly benefited by having entered the contest. The Community Progress contest began as a National Centennial Program and so much was accomplished that the members of the State Committee got the Kdlog Company to sponsor a continuation of the program. The awards are only given every two years (in the even numbered years), but this is a way of getting the towns interested in each phase of everyday living. Tltere are cash awards, which can be used only for community improvement, and this is a great help in developing Our amphitheater patks and recreation centers. would not have been built had it not been for the grants we have received and the cash prizes we have won. We are sincerely grateful to the main thoughtful citizens who have helped win these awards.
