Utah 84631 I By Progress Printing Company B miM0RE smu Reporter 0, Ruth Are you wondering how I have time to w nte a column for the IKOGRI.SS, when I am under such pressure to get the new book Builders of Early Millard finished by June 30th? I rcallv did consider skipping my article this week but decided that if could write while in so much pain following surgery last November, surely I could write under a few tons of pressure from my printer. And guess w hat? My nephew . Dr. Blame Huntsman and his wife Helen volunteered to rewrite some of the biographies for me, as did our D U.P. President Florence Swallow. Mrs. Dwight Hunstman, (Sylvia), mv niece, is also doing some biographies. In fact, she works whenever Dwight doesnt keep her busy helping him build their home. They are living in the house and finish one room at a time. The beautiful kitchen makes me so jealous! Perhaps you arc wondering what there is left for me to do. Stop wondering, as there are so many that I am sitting up late nights and begin early mornings, just to get the rest finished. When you take biographies which arc from five to twenty pages long and rewrite them into around two pages of double spaced typing, without leaving out the most important events of the persons life, you really work under stress. All of the originals are being preserved, in order that the items which are in them may be used by the families, if and w hen. the families w ant to print a history and can afford to print many pages about each pioneer, or ancestor, as some of these people were not true pioneers, since we are printing biographies of settlers up to 1876, and the real pioneers ended in May of 1869, when the railroad came to Utah. However it still took a week to go from Salt Lake to Fillmore, and people still had to go through years of poverty before the railroad helped bring merchandise closer to Millard County, especially to the East side. am real hopeful that we will finish this job in professional fashion. neglected to include my daughter Daila who has helped do around fifty of these biographies and she is my Pride and Joy" in literature, but she has a family who keep her v busy that she has little time for writing. I am in hopes that she can write professionally when her family is raised. Wed in The book is not the only pressure we have this week. As you all know, we are landscaping the New Park, as we get some money with which to purchase planting material. Up to now, every shrub and tree which has been planted in that Park has been donated bv the Garden Club, the Fine Arts Guild, the D.U.P., Millie Callistcr and Edith Calhster. The Amphitheater was built with money we have won and which was matched by a grant. VVc can all be grateful that so far the Park has cost the tax payer very little, except for uphas been done keep and many, many dollars in by donated labor. We arc still going in small groups and working on the weeds on the hill. Tomorrow morning (Monday), we w ill go at seven oclock and work on the hill until the men (all volunteers) come to plant more trees on the North end of the hill, among all of those rocks. The group of ladies which has done the weeding so far consists of: Maida Walton, President of the Fillmore Garden Gub, Edith Callistcr, Elda Freeman. Lulu Peterson, Helen Huntsman, Merle will take pictures for the scrap Hone and myself. book, and pictures of the men and boys who will plant the trees. Reed Robison is in charge of the group, and w e surely appreciate his help. Don Smith is furnishing the planting mix to put around the trees, we also appreciate what Mr. Smith docs for us. Freeman Rowley is digging the holes in which the trees will be planted, and may I say that in all the years I have worked as Civic Improvement Chairman. Freeman has cooperated with me wholeheartedly; every citizen in Fillmore should be thankful for the excellent work Freeman has done for Fillmore City through the years. After all Fillmore has some very wonderful citizens, and I should know for I am after help nearly every day, and have always been able to get the help we needed.
