Dutson Co-dilor Jane Wilson FILLMORE J M..rge Barton Rc'poi by STELLA DAY Do you ever feel as if there is a special gremlin folyou that keeps you from feeling up to par? He just wont let you feel strong and able to meet any emergency? You think that you will perhaps be better by tomorrow, but that doesn't happen, tomorrow only brings some other ailment. Once the body gets below par, it is difficult to get it adjusted again. One part of the bixly is dependent on another part, much the same as machinery, however it is difficult to get a new part for a worn out part of the body. We are each built differently and the new parts don't quite fit, the rest of the body works to get rid of it, or so it seems. The summer is the most beautiful part of the year, as well as the busiest. We only have six months at best, to raise enough food to last us all year, and in addition to food, we have all those shrubs and flowers which do so much to make life worth while. With a bodv full of arthritis pains, it would be difficult to get out of bed in the morning, if it were not for the thought that there arc so many new plants coming into bloom. T ven before the snow melts, the little snowdrops and crocus bravely put out their first blooms, and to me it is the best medicine in the world. From then on to late fall, new blooms each day get me out of bed even though moving around is a real task. For instance, I have just returned from Salt Lake, as I write this article, where I went to help judge a rose show, in the Garden Center at Sugar House Park, sponsored by the Utah Rose Society. Although I can hardly walk, I still helped with the judging. 1 took along my tall stool which is easy to slide along the floor from one classification to another. This kept me off my feet most of the time. Surrounded by such beauty, 1 was so inspired that even the gremlins forgot to pest me. Some of the entries were such perfect specimens that it was almost unbelievable to see such perfection. All of us should plant at least, one new rose bush each year, to bring more happiness into our daily lives. I would love to have a small rose garden down at the new park, but I know it would be as neglected as are the shrubs which surround the big sign. Each year we have to get groups mostly of garden club workers, to dig the weeds from around those poor little struggling Beautiful parks mean hours and hours of shrubs. maintenance. If each pervin just felt that he should give a few hours of his time toward maintaining these public parks, towns and cities would soon have many such lovelv sjHits. but the cost of caring properly for shrubs, trees and grass is prohibitive, unless we have more volunteer serv ice. Maida Walton, our present of the Garden Club suggests that each family be assigned certain trees, shrubs or plants to weed and keep in good condition each summer. If the family moves from town then another family is assigned the job. If some one were in charge and reminded the family of its duties, I am sure that would be a real solution to how our town could be full of lovely recreation spots. We really ought to try it out with few families to begin the program, just to prove it can be done. We know it is possible as right now Edith Callistcr is taking care of all of those beautiful trees and shrubs which Millie Callister donated to landscape around the amphitheatre. By good planning, some young family could donate a rose garden to the park and train their children to help care for it as they grow older and at practically no expense. This fall they could get rose slips from my gardens and other gardens containing the very choice roses. They could plant them on their own grounds in order to care for them until the bushes are large enough to plant at the park, and from then on they could spend a few hours each week during the growing season caring for them with their children, take a picnic in the park, and have fun while teaching the children how to groom a rose bed. The tinetostart rose slips is in August, I promise to give any one all the rose slips they want. How many volunteer families do I get? I can't close this article without mentioning how happy all of us are who work so much at the new park, to have Jack Peterson and his well trained family as care takers of our parks. We can be sure every thing possible will be done to maintain our plantings. No matter how early we go to work in the morning, Jack is there ready to more than do his part. Be sure and compliment him on his industry, the very next time you see him. He is really a blessing to OUR TOWN.
