Show Iritlav Special program Foreign Relations program Our Town Monday, March 2L FIllMORE by STELLA DAY Are you as happy as am that March, the first monih of spring, is here? Even though wc will still have more wintery days, we know we can go out under the snow and find the spring (lowers, crocus, cionodoxa, snowdrops and dutlodils. I can hardly wait to get out and plant early vegetables, radishes, peas, oinions swiss chard and all of the hearty vegetables on which the frost has little effect. I veil though we have little room for gardening, we can raise several crops of good eatingon the very same ground if we plan well and fertilize properly. Many people sav it doesn't pav to raise a garden but how many of us do things which don't pay? Does it pay to have an automobile, when walking is the best exercise a pervin can take and when we need to go to other towns we can ride the bus? But will any one take that advise? However, we go on eating foods filled with preservatives, which cause all sorts of ailments, simply because it doesn't pay to raise a garden. We need the vitamins which are only in vegetables and fruits that are fresh from the garden to the freezer or to the dinner table. We also need the exercise that it lakes to plant, irrigate and cultivate a garden. Our Creator gave us all of the muscles we need to use in raising our ow n food and in earning a liv ing, but w hen these muscles are not used enough they become soft and we get all sorts of ailments, for which the best cure is exercise. If you have had to go to the hospital lately, you will notice that they have you up and exercising right away in order that you won't get a blood clot, or so you won't get frozen muscles" such as we get when we have anhritis and it hurts to move certain muscles. We are all naturally lazv and dread getting out of bed and down to the terapy department where they know just how to get you to move those hurting muscles." After we have exercised for short periods, they let us test since we can overdo the exercises, which will also delav the healing ptocess Common sense is the kev word to all nl our troubles, but it takes us years to discover this lad Recovering from surgery poses about the same problems as getting at our spring wmk afu r otii long winters rest. We know it has to be done, but wc put it off as long as we can. There are things we can do even if it is still too muddy to get at our planting. We can start to trim all of the dead branches and those which need trimming in order to let the sunlight in to the center of the tree or to properly shape the tree or shrub. We can also pick up old dead branches, which have been broken by the snow and we can puk up the old cans from the streets, which careless people have thrown around instead of .r.g tnem in the trash cans. If you own a truck and you line sc, me young members of the family, take them out for a ride and have them get out and pick up cans and litter from our streets and haul it to the City Dump. While the ground is soft, weeds are easily pulled, liven a small first grader can help get the streets and sidewalks around vour neighborhood clean and neat before-warweather arrives. If childten help to clean the streets, they will be more anxious to keep them dean and will probably stop someone from throwing their cans on the street instead of into the trash cans. The way OL'R TOWN looks should concern each id us. We have been getting many compliments on being a friendly town lately. Now we must not lot get that we have the honor of being "The Cleanest Little City in the U.S.A. and we must be careful not to lose such a wonderful name. It took all of us to get that title and it will take all of us to keep it. When the town looks shabby, remember you ate expected to help gel it clean and well groomed again. Please do vour part' already know of one good wotker who has been out picking up trash. His initials ate G M Can vou guess who he is? I 1 N Kalhv Murdock Named State Dairy Princess attendant Miss SI.
