Show Police Ucus ACCIDENT Karl Lee Purcell, Manti, Utah, and his family sustained minor injuries when their car overturned one mile south of Scipio on the Highway to Salina, The accident happened at 1 1 :40 a.m. August 17, 1977. The Purcell car was being driven by Purcell's wife, Agnes Annette and the family was on its way to visit relatives in Fillmore. Mrs. Purcell apparently lost control of the car and it rolled. MILLARD FENDER BENDER William Wesley Reeves, Sandy, Utah, was traveling south on business when he ran into the back end of a car that had stopped for a stop sign in Flowcll August 17, 1977. The accident happened at 9:20 a.m. The other car was driven by John M. Eye who was traveling through on vacation from Lawrence, Kansas. There were no injuries and only minor damage to the vehicles involved. Investigating Officer was Kirk Harding of the Utah Highway Patrol. SEMI TRACTOR AND TRAILER ACCIDENTS Two separate accidents occurring almost simultaneously involving two semi tractors and trailers created a spectacular scene and blocked traffic for hours August Millard County, Industrial Foundation Millard Local Development Corporation were presented Thursday Association ot with the Utah Counties Award for Cooperative Effort in Economic Development at a luncheon held in Hotel Utahs Grand Ballroom. The presentation was made at the luncheon session of the 28th Annual State Economic Conference hlch ls sponsored by the Utah Industrial Promotion Division and Utah Job Service which was attended by 500 of Utah leaders in business, industry, education anaj 80vcrnmcn Award for Economic Development Millard County government, by the various communities through their elected representatives, by civic and fraternal organizations throughout the county, and by rank and file Millard County citizens. The climate for encouraging economic growth had existed for several years as evidenced by the formulation of Fillmore Industrial Foundation and West Millard Local Development Corporation. In May 1968 a effort was established at the county level with the of an economic appointment with director development resources and support provided by the Millard County Commission. Millard Countys cooperative effort for economic development has been notably demonstrated in the location of Brush Wellmans Sll million beryllium processing complex near Delta which created 80 new basic industry jobs; in the establishment of Review Apparels three manufacturing plants at Fillmore, Scipio and Hinckley with full-tim- e 17, 1977. The first accident at 1:40 p.m. involved a truck owned by W.S. Hatch Co. and driven by Edward Cooper of Long Beach, California. Cooper, 38, was headed south on one half mile north of the south Holden exit when his tractor and tanker trailer tipped over blocking all southbound lanes of traffic. Investigating Officer Bill Pectol, Utah Highway Patrol, said the cause of the accident was speed and wet roads. Cooper's tanker was loaded with benzene, a highly flammable liquid used as a solvent. The benzene spilled over the highway and disolv- ed the asphalt. Trooper Pectol also said quite a few people in the area of the accident scene got headaches from the fumes. Damage to the tractor was esti- mated at $16,000. and $8,000. to the trailer. Cooper was uninjured. The second accident happened at 1:42 p.m. just two minutes after the first accident. A semi tractor and trailer owned by Savage Bros. Inc. and driven by Richard Thomas Chadwick. 44, Pleasant Grove, Utah, popped up over the hill and Chadwick saw the first accident, locked his brakes trying to keep from hitting the overturned semi, and jackknifed his truck which was loaded with cement for Carling Equipment Co. here in Fillmore. Chadwicks tractor did not overturn, but his trailer did. He was tossed around in the cab and sustained multiple cuts on his head, arms and face. He was taken to Fillmore Hospital by EMTs, treated and released. Estimated damage to the Savage Bros, tractor was $24,000. and $5,000. to the trailer. Trooper Pectol said the south bound lanes of traffic were closed from 2:00 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. while the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) crews and the Fire Departments from Fillmore and Holden cleaned up the highway. It w as also closed for a few hours Thursday morning for repair to the road surface. We are soliciting your cooperation in joining the association and participating in the underdistribution ground pressurized system for the irrigation water.
