Top flilil entertainment coming Friday, March 25, at 7 thirty p.m. in the Hizii School Auditorium, the Early Music Players from West will minster College perform. Kenneth Kuchler and Hermione Abbey will direct. With a spirit of brightness prevailing, each musician is eager to share sounds and stories about the instruments, dances and songs commonly performed in the 15th and 16th centuries. The players acknowledge (hat one reason for participating in an early music group is that it provides a learning experience for both performers and audience. Peggy Stimson, one of the performers, finds it ating to hear the difference between their (Renaissance) music and " our music. Wistful Melinda Dicfender-fe- r says, I joined the group because I intend to incorporate early music into a teaching situation. Another Darlene Bargar says, Playing the recorder is enjoyable and challenging." Suzanne Healy and Trace Hopkins, crumbhorn specialSmall ists, believe that groups give the performers a greater opportunity to solo and to be heard. Since the musicians are required to stretch their skills from one instrument to another, and must also expand their energies to dance and song, elasticity is their keyword. Some learn certain instruments out of necessity as in the case of Hubbarth. 5'11" Becky She strums and bows the dulcimer and psaltery and one day she found herself into the bass blowing Because I was recorder. the only one in the class arms were whose long enough to handle the instru- ment." Because of various sizes and shapes of the instruments, long arms, overand stretched fingers, bellow like lungs are needed. the However, players willingness to speak the musical language of the Elizabethan masters, seem- ingly is worth all the effort.
