Show tjmf'm w ah 1 Programs and parlies usher idejOur Town BY STELLA DAY real Christmas spirit child. No one ever Durchascd a Christmas tree. Each family went out in the hills and cut the family Christmas tree, and the children helped bring it home and helped make the decorations for it. We popped corn and strung it on heavy thread to drape it gracefully on the limbs of the tree. We cut colored paper, glued them into rings and fastened them into chains for decorating the tree. We baked candies and cakes shaping them into stars, crescents, angels, and hung them on the tree. Each family member helped to make the tree beautiful and the tallest member got to place the star on the very top of the tree. Mother cleaned chickens and turkevs. while now we purchase them ready for the oven. Mothers also made mince- meat, baked pies, fruit cakes, cookies, candies of many varieties, and best of all in a Danish household, they made Danish sausage, and stuffed the sausage in skins-t- he most delicious meat, seasoned as no other sausage I have ever eaten. I have sat at my Grandmother Hansons table and helped stuff sausage by the hour and how I long for some at Christmas time, but although I know how to make it. I cannot gel the ingredients any more. The true Christmas spirit is still with us, however, for those who attended the Christmas Party. For the members of the Fillmore Garden Club enjoyed that spirit in abundance at the home of Dale and Josic Ashman. Most of the Christmas parties of late years arc held in public dining rooms where the entertainment and food are both so commercialized that those who attended have to have some artificial stimulant to give them the Christmas spirit. Dale and Josic have a large living room with an extra large fireplace which sends out a warm welcome to each guest, together with the welcome received from such ideal hosts who greet each guest with love and good will. A tastefully decorated Christmas Tree stands beside the fireplace. We were a mixed group of all ages. President of the Garden Club Joyce Quarnberg. brought Sandy with her and Jolenc Stephenson brought Kelly. Dale and Josie, being grandparents had all sorts of toys for children. Thus they enjoyed a real fun evening, not only the children but each one of us felt that warm hospitable feeling with which both Josic and Dale are so richly blessed. Other guests were Odell and Flora Stewart, our faithful members from Meadow, who have added a great deal to our Garden Club. Once this summer when Flora had an abundance of strawberries, she made several large delicious strawberry pies and covered them with whipped cream as a surprise treat for the members who attended that meeting of the Club. Fern Holdaway, who sparks any gathering with her ready wit, added much to the the most delicious hot sauparty. Arlene Olpin sage rolls, or anything else for that matter, and happy dependable Daisy Rogers. Noble and Lila. Dy, the best neighbors and friends any 6nc could evef hope to have, and Ilene Cooper and her daughter Jolene, who can hold an audience spell bound with her original games and entertainment. all helped to make the evening an outstanding affair. Remember I had not been out of the hospital and my ow n home for over six weeks, nor did I expect to attend this party until Edith Callister, who accomplishes more worthwhile projects in one day than any person I have ever met. offered to help get me into the back seat of her car ( it takes a whole back scat for that heavy leg) and helped me into Dale and Josies house. How happy I am that I could attend this party where every participant was filled with Im e and good will toward every one. We had a most delicious supper where everything from five varieties of home made candy to hot yeast sausage rolls were homemade, by the most wonderful cooks in the state. I am so happv I have eood friends who will take the time to wait on me and help me enjoy the real Christmas Spirit. My hope is that the spirit of love and helping each other may continue long after the Christmas Holidays are gone. who-make- . s Receives gold key for sales volume Fillmore resident Ilene of 150 W.
