WILSON .1 t 1 - 'TOTAL K, Nature is an expert at teaching us to expect the unexpected. The lovely weather we had from Feb. 22 to 29 had us thinking spring had arrived early. We had better begin our spring work. I. for one. got out in my garden and broke up large patches of sod. So much grass had grown among my iris in the south patch, that I knew I could never dig out all of the roots, so I had the north section plowed. The warm weather had mellowed the sod leaving it just right for removing grass roots. I was so encouraged with the progress made! But just when was confident I would get the grass all removed. March came in like a lion. I am thankful for the moisture in that big wet snow storm, but why did the temperature have to drop so low? We have the biggest icicles of the year hanging from our south entry. My spring song soon turned to grumbles. The weather can surely humble us. We realize the in- significance of man to control his surroundings. A businessman may be in New York and have a very important meeting scheduled for that evening in Salt Lake city. He boards the plane which should get him there three hours before the time set for the meeting. When the plane arrives over the Salt Lake Airport, the fog is so thick the pilot cannot land the plane. He flies to San Francisco where the business man has to stay until the fog lifts. There is no use making a big scene" as the airline officials can do ..othing about the w eather. They are first of all, interested in the safety of their passengers, or they would soon be out of business. Life is unpredictable. We cannot say positively what we will do tomorrow. We can take advantage of every precious minute to work on different projects, most of which are worthwhile and will help us develop some of the many talents with which each person is endowed. We never know just what we can do unless we really and sincerely put our best efforts into the project. Wc should all have different types of projects in order that we can be improving our skills and making life more worth living, no matter what kind of weather nature gives us. 1 1 Take care of your yards Even though the weather is chilly, we can trim dead limbs from our shrubs and trees. It is a good time of year to evaluate our landscaping. Just how can we improve our yards? Where can we plant a few very colorful flowers which will add interest to our yards? We nearly always lose a few rose bushes or different types of perennials, which should be replaced with something new and. exciting. There are so many new hybrid plants which ad) so much to out pleasure all season. Sometimes as we get older we seem to lose interest in our yards, but this is the very time to keep them well groomed and attractive. We need the exercise, as well as the uplift that beautiful surroundings supply. If the family is young, each child should be allowed to plant a small plot of ground which is his very own. Mother and Dad may suggest a few items he would enjoy, but consult the childs wishes and let him develop his own ideas, and his own individuality. First teach each member of the family the basic principles of design: space, line. form, pattern, texture, color, have them cut pictures from a catalog and form them into a pleasing pattern, with colors and textures which will make a pleasing design. Once basic principles are understood, there is plenty of opportunity for each member of the family to express his ow n individuality. As he takes the full care of his little plot, he will become aware of what it takes to raise a garden and make a real home, surrounded by beauty as well as supplymeals. ing the family w ith nourishing, We may not quite agree with all of the changes brought about by some members of the family, but wc will eventually have the satisfaction of seeing these same children putting into practice in their own yards, the lessons they have learned as children. This experience has been my happy privilege. I am exceedingly proud of our four children, who each have gardens of their ow n. and each is entirely different from the others. Bel-vis the only one with a very delightful Japanese Garden. Daila. Vance and Tom each have beautiful gardens, which they thoroughly enjoy. Much of the know ledge they acquired as children was because of a scry patient father who taught his own chNdrcn hgardenand spent many hours teaching his grandchildren. Being the son of James.
