Those who were fortunate enough to attend the Bicentennial Dance sponsored by the Fillmore Stake Relief Society were treated to just such a program. al The hall was beautifully decorated to a spacious Southern mansion. Tall white represent entwined with lovely red roses, extended the north and south sides the entire length of the hall. White wrought iron furniture enhanced the cast end of the hall just below the stage. The orchestra was seated in the west end of the large-recrcation- hall. Zola Beckstrand, president of the Fillmore Stake Relief Society, and her board of directors had worked many days to complete the decorating of the building and tended to every detail which makes for a very successful party. The delightfully interestingly educational-floo- r show was written and produced by Shirley Shepherd. Since the Relief Society is composed of women members, Shirley chose to honor women of different eras who have been leaders in accomplishing projects which will be and are of benefit to society. The distinct, expressive diction of Maurene Cummings kept the interest at high pitch through the entire show, as Carma Swallow softly played the music representative of each era. The first woman. Elizabeth Pinckney, was portrayed by Ellen Davies. She was escorted to the middle of the hall by handsome Dr. Bruce Beckstrand, who did the same service for each of the participants. Elizabeth was the wife of a very famous American colonial, statesman, Charles Pinckney, Charleston, S. Car. She was mother of the famous Charles Cotesworth Pinchney, ambassador to France during the trying times when the colonies were trying to become recognized as a free nation. Elizabeth herself, operated three large plantations, in South Carolina while her men folk were fighting the Revolutionary War. The profits from the produce she raised went to support the War. The next era was represented by the charming leader of society, Dolly Madison, wife of James Madison, Secretary of State to Thomas Jefferson. Since Mrs. Jefferson had died before Thomas became the third President of the United States. Mrs. Madison often acted as hostess for President Thomas Jefferson. James Madison, her husband, became the fourth President of the United States. Dolly Madison became the favorite knelett among all of the diplomats, and famous personages who visited the White House. Writer Bayard Smith writes of Dolly. "She looked like a queen, behaving with perfect propriety, always cheerful and considerate, unassuming. dignified, sweet and graceful in manner and appear' Mai-gaire- ance." Sherry Peterson (Mrs. Robert Peterson) dressed in a delicate yellow dress, large straw hat with yellow plume, an exquisite yellow lace parasol depicted Dolly Madson to perfection. Emma Hale Smith, wife of the prophet Joseph, and first President of the Relief Society, was represented by Norma Wood, depicting the era during the foundation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The next era was the trek of the Mormons to Utah and Lucretta Robison, wife of Joseph Robison, mother of Joseph V.. Almon. Alvin, Alonzo. Benjamin, Procter and several other children, was chosen to represent women of these trying times. Lucreta was a relative of John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress and first signer of the Declaration of Independence. nual Membership Meeting, here in Fillmore. Ar:!cs Tims, tl Trying to Beat Train Can Be Deadly Game Dear Ann Landers: I am married In a railroad engineer. My husband loves his job except when he hits a car. Most railroaders know it's only a matter of time, because it happens to all or them sooner or later. My husbands time came yesterday. He is sick about it, but there was no way he could have avoided that acndenL Two people died because the driver ignored the flashing signals and the whistles, took the gamble and lost. I hope every person who reads your column will ask himself if he has ever done the same thing If he has. I hope it was the last time. Its so easy to misjudge the speed of a train in the distance. I have stopped at crossings and waited while other cars passed me and ly Ann landers went over the tracks, even though the signals were gome full blast. Some of them missed being nit by seconds. Trains rarely can stop in time to prevent an accident. What's more, a small car. if it is hit just right, can derail a train and injure or kill tne crew. I know this letter is too late to help the people who died yesterday, but please print it for the sake of those who are still taking chances. When they win, they win only a few minutes. When thev lose, they lose their lives.- -- Railroader's Wife. Dear Wife: In all the years I've hern writing this column, yours is the first letter Eve received on this subject.
