However it is a long ournev In ihe mode ol travel we are taking in our imagination. Our slow plodding oven will take eight days to complete the journey. But first let us sec what happened to bung about this journey, a messenger on horseback rode up to a small adobe home in which dwelt Anson Call and his lirst cute. I he messenger speaks, "Brother Anson, vou are summoned to Salt Lake at onec for a conference with President Hng-haYoung." Anson Call immediately mounted his hot sc and went w ith the messenger. When President Young saw Anson Call he gave him these instructions. "Brother Call. I want you to gather together thiitv families with ample provisions, and go down to the central part of the territory and select a eapitol for the territory. Choose well your men. Brother Anson, for wc will need men of skill to build the eapitol building, as well as men who will do credit to the town in which the eapitol is situated. I will personally accompany your party, and take with me a committee of men well fitted to help in the selection of the site upon which to build the eapitol building. Now the Territory of Utah at that time consisted of the present area of Utah plus all of Nevada, part of Ari0113. and part of Colorado and California, an area of 225.000 square miles, w hereas today Utah's area is 84,9ti square miles. Brother Call returned to him home in Bountilul, and began at onec to select his men. Now temember, these families were just getting settled in their new homes. Salt Lake City was just a small four year old town, whose citizens had left their homes in the Tastern United States and mot of their earthly possessions in order to come to Utah. Now thev were being asked to leavejust as they were beginning to get some roots once more. Did they quibble and suv."llow much will I get out of it? Will the government keep me? Ihcv never thought of such things. I heir leader had asked them to go. and to them there was no question about what to do. This was the Lord's woik. they coiisideied it a mission. Most of these first families came fiom Davis and Weber Counties; Bountiful, then called Sessions Settlement, was the first town after Salt Lake to be settled in Utah. It is in tcrcsting to note that Samuel Brown, the fust husband of Helen McBride Colgrove. grandmother of Cicnev.i speak man. Fern Robison and Gene Ashbv. was sent with Peru gnne sessions to make a wintei home on the pasture lards north of Salt Lake, whcie the Chur.h tattle wee bet h d that first winter of 1847. Samuel was later sent to I ilimoie together w ith Jacob Call, brother of Anson, was killed In ihc Indians because they were wearing soldic r's coats w hi. h had been purchased from the army, and the Indians mistook them for soldiers.
