Whatever position this had In past time, roughly can be fixed by assigning it to time; mui h other flows in Millard County are more remote, being fixed In Tertiary time, line reed not hesitate to fix the time of this outpouring a date many thousands of years ago. Gilbert states that the Hot Plug' Is possibly a million years old; but that the latest flow near Fillmore was a long time after that, at a time after all the w ater had disappearpre-g'aci- al tie-'ur- ed. So one can fix any intermediate date between those extremes. The Great Stone Fare is one of the most attractive features In Millard County. We have a photo of a great concourse gathered just below it many years ago, when a speaker addressed an outpouring from the various towns around. This gathering numbered several hundred, and the single file string of cars on leaving was over a mile long. Since that inception, the spot has been visited by many. Kach year the Seminary class visits it. with appropriate remarks. Croups have come from Salt Lake City, Provo, and other places, ns well bs persons living in the towns on the east side of Millard County. The spot has been visited by scientists; school teachers; lecturers; tourists, hurried visitors, and the mote leisurely, more studious sightseer who does not withdrnw until he has exhausted all possibilities of information and evidences of formation before leaving. DEPARTMENT 150 37. be killed that Just enough to satno wantisfy needs and hunger on hunting, no hunting Just for fun. This is very plausible, and is well horn by the glyphs on the rock, ns lines divide the twisting form of the Sevier, and on either side of that division deer or kindled animals are drawn. It could well be just what the Indians say it is - a big sign on 'he roadside, fixing rights, and warning not to tresspass. The path up to the Great Stone Face Is steep, and It Is hard, especially for persons past prime. The younger ones in the party can climb upon the very top oi the great mass of lava composing the face, and gather in a small group on the saucer-shape- d depression on the top. It make a very pleasfor ing outing groups of young people. From the eminence of the Great Stone face, many of the features of Millard County can be seen the approximate route of Kscal-ant- e into the valley; Pahvant Butte (that side does not show the water levels as plainly as does the east side of the butte); Notch Peak from this side; where the are at; Antelope Spring; Drum Mountains; the top of Topaz Mountain; and the Hot Plug. Possibly more things can be talked about of Millard County from this one spot, by merely turning to point them out, than in any other place In the county. It lends itself thus to lecturing purposes, "in the field. with all within the range of vision. It seems rather boastful to say, "this face is the most faithful representation of a human face in the t'nlted States," but the writer can think of none better that he has seen; that does not mean finality in Judgment, as others may have deer, mountain sheep, or by some designated as an ibex are to be found incised on the rooks. The most intriguing, and most baffling group is that named. "The Pole That Walks," which seems to depict In rough cartoon style, crudely drawn, a pole that walks, being provided with feet for that on the pole are two snakes hanging; and a curious figure much like the representation of the sun. By the side of tills e "Pole That Walks" is a crude of a girl with the famous large "tablets headdress" of the present-da- y Pueblo Indians in one of their annual Thanksgiving ceremonies. One can conjecture much In studyand possibly be ing this group right or wrong in the Interpretation strived at, as seemingly it baffles one after another In all attempts to render a satisfactory solution of its mysteries. Then around the corner of the lava flow, right by the road is the group of glyphs, very large, which the living Indians say "mean the division of the water and hunting rights on the Sevier River." They aver that it Is in effect, a roadside sign, prominently displaying to all the Indians of the past, equal rights to bends of the Sevier Jor fistmig purposes, and fixing th" rights of each to hunt, with equal territory assigned; but the Indians say. amicntly across the Sevier on cither side could not be indulged in without the permission given by the tribes on the side so entered for the hunt; and only on condition that no more game should 125 19, .cntrjl Utah, and Inarv a striking rtscin-blamto Josipli Siniili, one of tin Mormon propluts. In nn nciove but a short distance north from this face is an outcrop of shells, being the skeletons of myriads of small creatures which mice lived in Lake Bonneville; also a simil.tr outcrop is to be found on the southeast corner of the ''lava flow.' The motorist drives his car, on the way to the stone face, past many petroglyphs which may be found on the west slope of the lava flow. This Is well worth a pause, ns the glyphs are interesting. The ancient craftsman pecked the "patina" of the hard basalt face of the boulders, thus cutting" through the rich red end exposing the dimmer. lighter toned hue beneath, giving good contrast. Some of these markings may be anywhere from 7(K to 110(1 year old. They show a house plan, with square rooms, and possibly, what may correspond to a slpapu hole in the center, or if not. then alternately, the circular fireplace In the center of the room.
