The 1971 Deer Hunt opener has come and gone. It was a wet one with the hills already damp when a new storm came In Saturday, continuing until Sunday night. Many of the camps came out early Sunday and the kill ratio was once again "where you were" the opening 10 minutes. At the law and leg bone In Chalk checking station Creek, about 50 came through Saturday up until late afternoon. Three deer of fair size were reported, with the average running about 100. As the boys at Fish and Came say, Utahs deer here Is better than ever. It must be that we're all getting older and can't climb the hills quite as fast to calch them and also with age comes falling eye sight which means the old sharp shooter Is not like It used to be. Hill Climb May Become Annual Event. . . To work off excess energy, and to kill a few hours, several of the local jeepsters started an annual hill climb this year. And It proved to be so popular, It could easily really become a really annual event. Prizes were given for the most mud thrown, deepest rut dug, longest continued push and the most chains broken. Prizes Included a pound w Iverson roasted plnenutes, two quarts of tomatoe Juice, a withered hot dog left over from last summer and sore muscles for all who entered. Two vehicles entered the and tied for the grand prize shich was the "axle busting which was the "axle busing" contest. It all was a great way to spend part of the opening day. All the entrants this year were jeeps with the exception of a lone dark horse, a Bronco, which surprised everyone by walking off with top honors In the "chain busting' contest. Seriously, a lot of skill was shown in getting a few vehicles out of an extremelysteepcan-yo- n In about the slickest mud ever seen. The Deer Hunt opened locally and had a clean record as far as serious accidents were concerned. And It may have been some sort of a record after reading that several were killed and Injured In other parts of Utah. The only real problem seemed to be an abundance of mud that saw several vehicles stuck and some turn over. That same day several vehicles got mired In the mud near the Black Cedar hills and all but one got out late that night. The remaining tin horse was pulled out by Jeep Posse members early Tuesday. Sue and Kay Hare manned a radio base station In Fillmore Saturday and Sunday for the Sheriffs Department and with about 22 mobile units scattered around In the hills, most everyone who needed help was able to get It In a hurry. The Posse also spent two nights on attempts to locate hunters In Corn Creek who were needed to call home. These specifications go to the architect who must put them all together and design a safe, useable building which meets all building codes, and the amount of money the Board has to work with. Specifications for the Community Centers are being written by each of the agencies to be involved in the use of the Centers. Q. How many rooms will be left empty by removing two grades from Delta High School ? A. First, it has not been decided for sure that two grades can be removed because of the amount of money that will be available to build the new middle school-Buif two grades should be removed, there would be only one classroom left empty by this change. Crowding in the Shops would be relieved by having fewer students trying to use these areas. The principal is proposing developing a language arts resource center in one of the team rooms and a social science resource center in the other team room. The program would be moved from the Health room out in the gym, d the Remedial Program would move into a room, and a Guidance Center would be established in one room. This plan would alh'w some room for growth at the school. Q. A At least one grade and probably two in order to provide room for growth. Q. Is the Board unified on the question of the bond issue ? A. The motion to adopt the proceedings outlined by Burrows and Smith which would take this issue to the voters was passed unanimously in the regular Board meeting of August 11, 1971. Q. The Hoard is opposed to forcing any school to consolidate. When the State cuts teachers at those schools, the parents of children in those schools will be given a choice of cither staying at the present school with fewer teachers, or moving to Delta. In the past every school has chosen to consolidate rather than maintain a reduced program.
