Modern microwave and cable systems now handle these communication needs In new high density routes, eliminating the need for this open wire line. Long Lines normally would remove all the poles on a route not In service. But for 18 miles of the route, located 30 miles south of Milford, Utah, In the Cedar City BLM district, every tenth pole has been left standing. It was the Milford repo tor station on this route, a two story brick building, which was donated to the community last July for economic redevelopment. The 45 poles left are used by bald or golden eagles, hawks and the rare peregrine falcon according to the BLM. Long Lines has made the poles even mere attractive for nesting by adding wooden platforms on the crossbars of several poles. This structure, designed by the BLM, uullt by Long Lines, and Installed with the aid of a Mountain Bell ladder truck, provides a larger base for the nest building. The poles are also useful to these large birds as perches for resting or watching prey. Rabbits and rodents, pests for farmers are their quarry. Of these birds, the laid eagle which winters in Utah, Is quite rare. "But all of these birds are under pressure frotj mao's said Bert encroachment,1' Lowry, BLM district wOJUfe specialist. "These birds will be exposed on the poles to irresponsible people using them 1 Robert will report hs mission experiences in church at 7 pm. on May 2.1, in the IM-deWard Chnix'l.
