Judge Tops Lehi 2 1-7 By JERRY GARRETT Herald Sports Writer SALT LAKE CITY — It might wave been a good dayforfootball ifyou were a Green Bay Packer fan or even a Judge Memorial fan, but it was notthe dayto be a Lehi Pioneer fan as the Bulldogs defeated the Pioneers, 21-7 Friday. Theloss eliminates Lehi from the state AA tournan. ent, ‘twas a numbing 26 degrees at gametimeonthe“neutral”field at East High, less than a mile from the Bulldogs’ home tur‘. The object of the game seemed to be which team could keep from freezing the longest, rather than which one could make the mostpoints. The contest was a lot more even than the final score shows but one factor tipped the scales in favor of Judge Memorial. That factor was nnber7. The Bulldogs’ number seven, better known as Gary Barber, seemed to thrive on the cold bended andtheicy, frozen eld, Barber, a senior quarterback, was switched to running back late this year because, as Head Coach Gil Cordova puts it, “he can’t throw.” For a guy who can't throw, Barber had a pretty good day, throwing the play-option pass, tunning the end around and returning assorted Lehi kicks. Barber opened up the game with a 40-yard kickoff return Which gave Judge good position at mid-field. The Pioneer defense stopped the Bulldogs’ marchto the goal line and forced Judge into turningtheballover. Lehi didn't get too far and teturned the ball to Judge. The Bulldogshadthe sameproblem. On fourth down, Bulldog kicker Tony Salazar bobbled the high snap from center and Lehi’s Mike Strongblitzed through and ree on the ball at tne Judge Strong and quarterback Ron Ellison combined on five runningplaysfor the score, with Ellison keeping from the one on the final play. Brian Whimpey’s kick gave the Pioneersa 7-0 edge with 11:20 to go in the second quarter. The score seemed to take everything out of the Bulldogs UGASeis Election and turn the momentum squarely toward the Pioneers. Even Gary Barber’s 53-yard kickoff returi: after the score failed to get much enthusiasm. Lehi again forced the Salt Lakersto punt. Salazar arched a high onethatlanded on the Lehi 12 and took a bounce straight toward the Pioneer end zone. Butoneofthe Lehi safeties tried to field the ball at the three. He fumbled the ball around until two Bulldogs arrived on the scene and happily took over possession. Warmed at the good fortune, Judge’s sophomore quarterback, Tony Crandall kept the three yards to paydi:.. The conversion tied the contest at 7-7 with 5:15 remaining in the first half, In the second half, it was defense against defense, until Judge arrived at the Lehi 11. On fourth down-and-three, the Judge field goal unit was brcughtin, with Salazar kicking and Barber holding.
