Show Page %6—THE HERALD,Provo, Utah Sunday, October 24, 1971 Protestant Split Is Very Old By LOUIS CASSELS UPISenior Editor It is apparenteven to a casual observer that a good deal of controversy currently exists Cals within various major Protestant denominations. At least two major bodies have been driven to the brink of schism But the veal nature of the internal division which afflicts aeite» yerhae: YiieUCT ah OUT THEY GO! Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, Baptists and » others is widely misunderstood. Many have the erroneous impression it is of fairly recent origin and is concerned primarity with whether chur- ches should take a liberal, conservative or handsoff attitude toward social and political issues. Actually, the split which runs through Protestantism like a Grand Canyon is more than a century old, dating back to the period immediately following the Civil War, Andit has only an indirect relation to social action, “Thecore of the controversy,” says Dr. Harold Lindsell, editor of the inter-denominational Protestant journal Christianity Today, ‘‘is the question of the authority, inspiration and interpretation of scripture. This question ultimately determines one’s whole theology.” ‘The bandyixg-about of labels such as “fundamentalist” and “tineral” has done much to confuss the specific issues involved in this basic dispute over howthebible is to read, We are all therefore indebted to Dr. Jacob A. 0. Preus, president of the Lutheran Church-Missouri for summarizing the main positions taken by each side in “The Battleof the Bible.” In a speech before his own badly-riven denomination at its convention in Milwaukee last summer, Dr. Preus listed seven points of controversy. Thebasicdifference, he points out, concerns the term ‘“‘inspiration”’ as it is applied to the contents of the Bible. Some Christians believe ihat the spirit of God “inspired”the authors of the Bible in essentially the same way that the spirit continues to work among Christians — namely by providing inner guidance of a general und overall nature. ‘Theother pointof view, which Dr. Preus and millions of other Protestants hold to be the only ‘onetenable by a truly orthodox believer, is that “‘the scriptures are uniqueanddifferentfrom all other literaturesin that they are verbally inspired by God so that in all their words they are the word of God.” Thatis to say, the authors of the Rible were not simply guided by the spirit: They were so completely controlled that in every single passage of the Old and New Testament, << OPEN EVERY <\,) NIGHT § Monday Thru Friday “till 9 p.m. Saturday ‘till 6 p.m. ke va. Some of them are disposed to fire from their seminaries or pulpits, or even to drive out of church anyone who has reservations about plenary inspiration. Christians who would allow room for the possibility that some humanerrors crept into the wording of the scriptures, despite their overall divine inspiration, cannot accurately be lumped together under any particular label, such as “liberals,” for they include entirely orthodox, and even millions .
