Show By CASEY BOWN Hunting Prospects Are Goodfor the State Because our moisture year ending next October 1, has been above normal over most of the state it is a reasonable prediction to forecast good hunter success during the various seasons upcoming this fall. ‘Add the field reports from our Conservation officers and game mana lers concerning birdgame populations and e picture continues bright based upon‘he annual reproduction of our wildlife. With this in mind here we go in ourannual ictions and observation concerning the junts, Morethan million gamebirds will go into the hunter bag. Mostof these will be either duck or sant, though there will be another increase in both chukar hunters and numbers of birds taken as more hunters find the challenge of pursuing this little exotic import from the Asiatic countries. ‘ . The deer season wil! find gunners taking ninety five thousand animals at a success ratio above 55 percent. Someof the best hunting will be in the relatively little known and lightly hunted areaslike the Deep Creek country, Sou Books, and Indian Peaks where the elbow room is plentiful as most of us find the distance and the effort too much compared to our backyard excursions. | Theopenbull elk permit holders will tally out one animalper five hunters as this type hunt continues to build our herd numbers. Pheasant hunting will draw the usual heavy crowdof near 1¢0,000 folks and will again be the land abuse-trespass problem bringing the greatest criticism of our various seasons — unless eachof us carries the promise afield this year to contact the landholder wherever we put ourfeet down. The cotiontail cycle is on the upswing once more and this should bring smiles to the increasing numbers of us who account this an easy fun hunt for someof the finest tablefair in the gamebook. Secondary in the gamepicture herein Utah, thelittle ‘tails continue nationwide to be the most hunted and make up greatest weight harvest each yearof all game species — bigorlittle. Through all the seasons the success ration will comehighest to those who have the know how andgo fully prepared to meetall typesof field conditions. Yet, the elementof luck in any game see manytrophies taken by the beginner, or the camp tender take the best animalin the whole party andthe one time duck hunter gethis birds to include a couple of Canada geeseto fill his ba i summary, the forecast has to be a good one as morepeople are finding more recreation and outdoor pleasure during these hunts each year. Hope you have your share and remember, the happy hunter is the one who knows and abides the rules of his sport and respects the other fellow, especially the landholder who makes all this possible. Thebell tolled for Bill last week and it will continueto toll for us until that day when we again meet in the happy hunting ground across the horizon. Bill Coltrin was our kind of a guy as he also wasto thousands oflittle leagueres, high school athletes, the atletes everywhere in Utah, those whofish and hunt, and a host of both the meek andthe great from L. A. to New York. We will continue to relive countless trips. thousands of miles of travel, and all those great dayswith Bill when it was alwaysho, ho, ho and away we go in a world where,in spite of his lifetime of physical adversity and pain, he kept the day loose with perpetualsmile and wit. Most memorable were the trips with Pop Coltirn, and Mom C., and Maurine and Jimmy, Mary Ann, Mack, Ted. A wonderful family and Bill their champion — as he was champion to your scribbler and manyanothers. Always treasured and long rememberedwill be Bills’ philosophy aboutfish and game pursuits whenhesaid, “This is a fun gameorrecreation. WhenI cannot write it to sound like fun I won't write it at all.’ May his tribe increase. Yoursfor fun, Casey Fishing was rated top - flight at selected sites around Utah today, but the late summerdoldrums still kept angling on the slow side in much of the state. Fieldmen’ of the Division of Wildlife Resources reported fishing was best along the Weber River, in Upper Bowns Reservoir and along Diamond Fork. The Weber was rated real gcod for rainbow, brown, cvt- throat and whitefish and below Taggarts wasexcellent for rain- bow. Upper Bowns Reservoir was rated exellent for brooks and Diamond was excellent for rainbow. With fall weather approaching, fishing was expected to pick up considerably, especially By DAVID COHEN TURONTO (UPI) —Sectsman Jackie Stewart already has clinched the Grand Prix Driver’s championship for 1971, but that isn’t likely to slow him down one bit in Sunday’s $155,000 Canadian Grand Prix at Mosport Raceway, 50 miles east of here. With five victories and two seconds to his credit this year, Stewart has an unbeatable lead in the points standings. Still, there are several other good reasons to drive him on toward mop. ‘ 9.69 seconds showing. Central Region An indication of how serious the Colts are taking this game debut in Formula One racing; now, only a year jater,it is the class’s premie> machine, Tt has been the car Stewart has powered in amassing his 53 points in Grand Prix standings, 30 more than runnerup Ronnie Peterson of Sweden. Peterson and Ickx and any number of other drivers could upset Stewart Sunday. Stewart’s Tyrrell-Ford teammate, Francois Cevert, currently tied with Brazilian newcomer Emerson Fittipaldi for fourth spot in the standings, is considered a threat. First of all, there’s the little incentive of the winner's prize money, $14,000. Not a grand fortune but probably enough to keep Stewart’s Swiss estate in firewood for the coming winter. Secondly, there’s the matter of the 32-year-old driver’s pride. “Whenever I drive, I’m out to win,” he says, “no matter what the race is or where.” Which leads to Stewart's third reason for going all out: He's never won the Canadian Grand Prix. “I want to win for the people around here, the Scots especially,” he says. “Whenever I've come here they've been very kind with telegrams and good wishes. I want to win for them,” Jacky Ickx of Belgium also wants to win the Canadian Grand Prix, if only to give himself three wins in a row in the race. Other well-known drivers in the race are Denis Hulme, Graham Hill, John Surtees, Chris Amon and Jean-Pierre Beltoise. There are 24 positions on the starting grid and 22 have already been filled. Seven drivers will try for the last among them Canada’s George Eaton. Qualifying for the starting positions take place today and Saturday.
