Show Provo WinsState Title Without Playing By MIKE TWITTY Herald Sports Writer MURRAY — The Provo American Legion Baseball Team won the state championship here Saturday evening with a 4 win over Bountiful — andit only took five minutes on the field to secure the victory. Bountiful, winner cf the losers’ bracket, was scheduled to meet unbeaten Provo at 6 p.m. at Ken Price Park with another contest scheduled at 8:30 p.m. if Bountiful won the first game. However, Bountiful coach Neil Hancey and his team did not show up in protest of a tournament ruling Friday, When Bountiful didn’t show up, the Provo team, which had alread ~ taken the field, was declared the 1971 State Legion Champion and presented the first place trophy. Provo wili now advance to the regional tournament at Sheridan, Wyo., Aug. 25-30 along with the winners from Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado, Montana Wyoming. The District Seven champ goes to the national tournamentin Tucson,Ariz. the first week in Sept. Asked howit felt te have wonthe state title, Provo manager Ken Balser replied, ““We love it, That's what we started ~ut to do. This is a great bunch of kids,”’ ‘The situation developed after play Thursday. Provo, winner of four straight games, was given a bye Friday but not into the championship game. Commenting on the situation Jerry = Roosendaal, of the Legion baseball c mission said, “We just made a coiana|in setting up our brackets which was unfair to the team from the winner’s bracket. We corrected the situation Fridayto organize the final garnes as they have been in years past. Weapologize to the teamsandthe fans for the misunderstandings 2ud bad feelings which have occurred.” Troy Mott, Legion official, said the format was changed when national tournament headquarters informed the Utah officials that their original format did not match the uniform style in other state tournaments. Mott said he was informed that such a unique format mightend up disqualifying the Utah team from the regional championships. Mott said, “We felt that what we had decided upon was in the best interests of Bountiful and Granger wereto play Friday as were Hillcrest and Tooele. Those winners we. then to flip a coin with the loser playing Provo Saturday at 6 p.m. and the winner playing Prove at 8:30 p.m. If Provo had won both it would have been champion butif itlost one of the two the championship would have been played Mondaynight, Friday the Legion baseball committee realized its mistake and that all the teams which had one loss should haveto eliminate eachother for tne right to meet the unbeaten team. At the time the decision was announced Friday Bountiful had already beaten Granger 10-6 but Hilicrest and Tooele had not yet started. Don Gustof Hi!!crest and Anvelo Cerroniof Tooele refused to let their teams play because a schedule change had been nade during the progress of the tournament, When they refused both Hillcrest and Provo 12 and Granger 4 and then Thursday Provorallied in the ninth to down Tooele +3, Thatlast inning rally against proved to be the decides hearin onero the championship. Looking ae was the hitting of Scott Atkinson and ohn Bale and the brilliantrelief pichingoffRick Cloward which were instrumental in winning the top trophy. Cloward won thelast ‘wo games by striking out 19 in eight innings. Atkinson won one game and Veldon Law was victorious in another. It is also interesting to note that in four previous meetings between Provo and Bountiful, Provo won three of the four. it is unfortunate this year's situation snd schedule change developed but the change was onlyfair regardless of which team had emerged after Thursdayas ‘he only unbeaten team. What appearedto be the advantageof a bye Friday wasactually putting the unbeaten team atthe disadvantageof havingto play a doubleheader Saturdayinstead of having the losers’ bracket team play two games Saturday. then joined the protest saying it wouldn’t play unless the original schedule were adhered to. ‘The revised tournament schedule would have sent Bountiful against the winner of Hillcrest-Tooele in the early game Saturday with the winner playing Provo at 8:30 p.m. But with two teams disqualified Bountiful advanced into the championship against Provo Saturday at 6 p.m. Ttis ironic that the four teams complaining because the tournament was switched to the same formatit has always had and was intended to have this year were all beaten by Provo during the past week. Provo socred three-runs in the bottomof the ninth Monday to beat Bountiful8-7. Tuesday Provo bested Hillcrest 5-1.
