Leather Becomes Fashion Favorite both in the moderately- priced spring collection of Spanish leathers from Ledaspain and that firm’s cou- ture collection done by the Madrid designer, Pertegaz. Alex Gropper, president of the firm, and a 35-year vet- eran in leather fashions, has put as much thought into the rich detail and styling of his less expensive collection as was exercised in his couture line. There are great Spanish lambskins and antelope suedes from the Cclomer tanners, teaturing a new process that prevents cracking. This means that the most velvety suedes in reds, and even ing to you in an orange, one- piece Jumpsuit with matching midi trench coat? A pants outfit in pale blue or soft yellow leather? Sportswear or a coat in wild boar scythed down to an almost chiffon weight? Gropper also introduced a small collection of shortjacketed suits with ankle- length skirts in lambskin and jungle suedes. Ledaspain, famous for its intricate hand detailirg, this season adds a new look of lacing, smocking, pleated effects and embroidery. The Pertegaz collection features many midi-length pants outfits, among them a red lambskin jumpsuit with suspendered bib top and red and greenprinted silk skirt The variety of design and styles, mouth-watering colors and fine workmanship in these two collections put Alex Gropper in the front line of those who are responsible for the explosion of leather on the fashion scene. But a bright young wom an and writer on consumer affairs named Jennifer Cross says positively, “Yes.” Twoarticles she wrote for the Nation magazine on supermarkets inspired the Indiana University Press to ask her to write a bock. She called it “The Supermarket Trap” and thereby started a public controversy. Bess Meyerson Grant, New York’s director of Consumer Affairs, approves the idea. So does Ralph Nader, scourge of the careless manufacturer. He rates it as a book all consumers who do not want to be defrauded, duped or harmed need to read In her home in Santa Rosa, Calif., expecting her first child momentarily, she summed upher attitude on the current tuna fish and mercury scare. “No, I won't eat tuna now, considering my baby. How can she be sure of what additives, what substitutions, what changes in the original food have been made by the producers? The opportunity in the supermarket for amiable deception, for the use of doubtful chemicals, for masquerading one type of food as another—well, it is easy enough to figure out,” she adds. The author of “The Supermarket Trap” was born in England, educated there and wrote articles for the London Times, the New Statesman and Punch. Now she lives in the United States with her husband and continues as a consumer writer with a rather mellow sense of humor. “The food industry spends $2.9 billion a year on advertising. Cereals, soft drinks, beer, snacks and cupcakes get most of the emphasis. Practically none of the billions go for nutrition education. It does take courage to spend money advertising nutrition to an indifferent public. adding “How much should one rely on FDA reports? Or other government reports? is raises serious questions today. There is a vast food industry lobby. It consists of hundreds of separate organizations, farmers, individual producers, manufac- turers, canners, freezers and different types of retailers. There are 68 food and agricultural trade organizations with offices in Washington and others maintain public relations and legal counsels.
