Cavemen NudgeSpringville To MoveCloser To Tourney By MIKE TWITTY Herald Sports Writer SPRINGVILLE — American Fork took advantage of a Springville cold spell in the fourth quarter to topple the Red Devils 56-51 and take another step siwande the state tournament. Coach Cari Ingersoll’s Cavemen led 43-41 going into the final period period when the Red Devils hit a scoring drought and went scoreless during the first four and a half minutes. Meanwhile, American Fork was far from prolific during the stretch but it did connect often enough to jump ahead 49-41 and that lead was too much for Springville to overcome. David Durfey, the quarterback of the Cavemen offense, hit a free throw to make it 44-41 in the first minute of the final stanza. Steve Dean then hit a couple of baskets to up the neve to 47-41 with 5:24 left. ringville’s hopes suffered with 4:41 remaining when Sam Giles scored a layup on a fast break but was charged with an offense foul and the basket was nullified. Glenn Mathews then connected with 3:46 left for the 49-41lead. During the Springville disaster streak the Red Devils’ reboundingalso suffered as they managed only one shot per Lime down the: floor. Sometimes they were fouled which may have been American Fork’s strategy. Springville the front end of five consecutive one-and-one situations at the endof the third quarter and the start of the fourth quarter. And in a close ball game you can seldom do that andstill win. Giles, who missed three of the one-and-one tosses, finally put Springville back on the scoreboard with 3:31left and he did it from thefoul line finally but with jump shots instead of the usual free throw style. Leading 49-43 going into the last three minutes the Cavemen’s deliberate offense slowed down even more and the pressing game began for Springville. Durfey and Mathews were fouled and connected from the charity strip to make it 52-43 but then the aggressive Red Devil press Mathewsscored six points in the first two and a half minutes of the third quarter to push the Cavemen in front at 34-32 and they never trailed after that. Dean netted eight points during the last half of the quarter to preserve the two-point margin going into the final quarter. Dean edged Giles in the battle of the top scorers 19-18 and he got strong support from Mathewsand Allen who had 14 each and were strong on the bo ards.
