A QUICK PICKUP? SOMETIMES IT SEEMS to be easier to ski on all fours. Actually Pat Buckner didn’t have muchof a choice, she merely slipped. SKIING QUEST By RON BARKER Whatdoes skiing have to do with reading? Den Bird, principal of Grandview Elementary School in Provo, thinks there is quite a bit of correlation between skiing and reading. ‘hat’s one reason why Grandview has an eight week ski program available to its students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades. The Questproject is a part of the school’s reading curriculum. The theory goesthatif students’ interests are aroused, they will want to read more, especially about those things BEFORE GOING up the lift, beginners hear Junior Bounous give final instructions. that interest them. In this way they not only get the practice they need in reading, which improvestheir ability to read, but they also changetheir attitudes about reading and learning in general. School becomes a morepleasant experience and more of a challenge. Children receive more incentive to learn this way. Skiingis the latest activity that has been addedtothelist of Quest projects available to over 300 students at the school. Grandview pioneered the idea of using Quest projects in teaching several years ago, and the teachers and administrators at the school highly endorse the concept, said Mr. Bird.
